  Britain.tv Wikipedia - Rupee
The Rupee (₨ or Rs.) is the common name for the currencies used in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius, and the Seychelles; in Indonesia the unit of currency is known as the rupiah and in the Maldives the rufiyah.
In the late 19th century the customary exchange rate was 1 rupee to one shilling and fourpence in British currency, or 1/15 of a pound sterling.
Large denominations of rupees are often counted in lacs or lakhs (100,000) crores (10,000,000) and arabs (Abja in Marathi) (1 billion).

The advent of Green adventurers and their assimilation into the Indian cultural society around 200 BC gave rise to India-Greek dynasties and the coinage system was overhauled to show the profile of the then rulers and their names in Green and in Indian languages—khrosthi and brahmi.
The birth of the rupee is credited to the Afghan ruler for which he was known as the “Prince of Indian Coinage.” A man of vision, he also built the Grand Trunk Road transversing a vast sub-continent from the Khyber Pass to the Bay of Bengal.
Hence was born the first rupee of a fixed weight and it continued to be issued and used until the British came to India.

INDIAN Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, unlike some of his predecessors, is not in the habit of making casual remarks and then recanting it when the dirt hits the ceiling.
So when he referred to the full convertibility of the Indian rupee — pointing out that it was time to revisit the issue, since the foreign exchange position was now comfortable - at a book-launch function at the country’s financial and commercial capital last week, the markets took serious note of it and reacted positively.
The rupee was initially devalued, and then came the tortuous process of having a partly-free and a partly-controlled currency.

The fundamental reasons for the rupee to continue weakening are still in place, he says, while the sentimental reasons that have been propping the rupee seem to be fast disappearing, especially with foreign brokerage houses predicting a correction of the Indian equity markets.
Noteworthy during this recent slide by the Indian rupee was the lack of intervention by India's central bank.
Rupee has already touched the 10 1/2 month low and if the FII money keeps pouring into the stock market as it has in last 9 months of 2005, then we might see some stability.
