The head and back are a yellowish brown, while the rump and upper tail coverts are fl; the rest of the tail is flish brown as are the wings (which have barring on the secondary wing feathers); the breast, sides, and belly are a pale yellow brown; the beak and eyelids are silver.
Note: the Indian Silverbill (Lonchura malabarica, also known as the Common Silverbill, White-rumped Silverbill, White throated Munia, or White-throated Silverbill) looks nearly identical to the African Silverbill, but its rump is white instead of fl and it lacks the barring on its secondaries.
Interestingly, when building their own nest, some silverbills will make the entrance hole face a wall or the back of their nest box so that it is not as easily accessible.

This shafttail baby hatched in a friend's aviary then found itself alone on the floor when it was 10 or 12 days old.
I have thoroughly enjoyed hand-raising the little kid, and today, at 36 days of age, it finally put beak to dish and contemplated weaning.
I have enjoyed hand-raising other finches (zebra finches, silverbill waxbills, Bengalese) but this shafttail appears to be the most interested in being my friend.

I know that African Silverbill is included in the 2005 Tax list.
The species (Lonchura cantans) is listed as a Hawaiian species on the most recent AOU and Hawaiian checklists that I have found on the intenet, but I can't get it to show up as an available entry in BD unless I select "World" as a location filter.
I understand that African and Indian Silverbills were recently split from Warbling Silverbill, but I believe that the general consensus is that the species found in Hawaii is African Silverbill, not Indian Silverbill.
