Indian summer (also called Old Wives' summer in the United Kingdom) is a name given to a period of sunny, warm weather in autumn, not long before winter.
The dates for Indian summer are very inexact due to the enormous variations in climatic patterns throughout each hemisphere.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, where winter and summer temperatures vary relatively little and some of the warmest weather of the year tends to occur in October anyway, the term "Indian summer", if used at all, does not have the same potency as it would in a region with hot summers and very cold winters.

 BigYawn.net :: Carbon Leaf :..: Indian Summer
Unfortunately, Indian Summer is about as pleasant and inoffensive as the meteorological event itself.
However, the seven minute slow-burn closer "The Sea" shows off the band's strengths -- it starts out quietly with acoustic guitars and mandolins, but over the course of the song the electric guitars buzzing in the background slowly muster and build up strength until the song becomes a mid-tempo anthem of strength and resilience.
Just as every indian summer fades quickly into winter, there will always be a hard-working regional band inoffensive enough to be booming out of both a college freshman's (and their mother's) ipod -- before fading back into relative obscurity (Dishwalla and Sister Hazel, anyone?).

Carbon Leaf has always been an energetic and enthusiastic live band, rocking intimate live performances a lot like private jam sessions, the band members are all excellent musicians and uninhibited in their creativity, and their previous albums reflected this raw and untapped ethic.
Their style has always been a refreshing mix of folksy, moody, and hyper with themes that tend to be introspective and interpersonal without being depressing, with a fixed eye on the horizon (with a sort of a pioneer spirit; decidedly Virginian).
The songs on this album are diverse and take a bit of everything the band has developed up to this point, the general mood and theme of the album is just what the title suggests: zest for life with a heavy understanding of the world, hope and joy that has seen melancholy.
