Tobacco cultivation spread in India during the British East India Company's rule of the country (from the mid-18th century to 1858, when India came under the British crown).
Before long, many Indians began to use such products—which can reasonably be called "neopaan"—instead of paan, and—with their wide availability in grocery stores and the like, and their cost being approximately that of the candy in such places—many nonaddicts and youths developed addictions to them.
Two days later ITC stated in a press release: "Following the reported decision of the Cabinet, in a constructive spirit and to avoid any ongoing controversy, ITC has decided to voluntarily withdraw from all sponsorships of sporting activities irrespective of the legal position on the subject." Its sponsorship of India's national cricket team thus ended.
