To the British, viewing the caste system from the outside and on a very superficial level, it appeared to be a static system of social ordering that allowed the ruling class or Brahmanas, to maintain their power over the other classes.
In the meantime, the upper 'castes (the words upper and lower had no meaning then, it is we who 'refer to them as such italics are mine) came to the rescue of the lower castes in 'distress and the lower castes fought under the banner of the upper 'caste Kshatriyas in the defense of freedom.
But caste had also been omitted in the wartime census of 1941 for reasons of economy, and because the British census commissioner was confronted with innumerable petitions requesting changes in caste name and rank.

Caste is a portuguese word and sdoes not properley explain the concept of varna.
Caste is very corrupt and while one may acknowledge the fact that every one is at different stages of their spiritual journey, that society stratifies, caste distinction should be done away with.
I believe caste is a curruption of Krishna, and Buddha, etc, advocation of different paths in life - eventually somehow this has become people being born into paths, which is bullshit, I believe infact path is chosen, and scripture seems to support this.

Caste is a term, which is used to specify a group of people having a specific social rank and dates back to 1200 BCE.
The Indian term for caste is jati, and generally designates a group that can vary in size from a handful to many thousands.
The earliest expressions of caste can be found in one of India’s vast bodies of religious scripture known as the Vedas, which are though to have been complied between 1500 and 1000 BCE, although the time of their composition is under debate.

Thus, to the extent that dharmashastras conflict with shruti and the Gita, the latter prevails.
Huh there's no problem in caste system as long as the people can be rich even for their low caste status.

I have also been told that one's caste is not something one is born into but corresponds to one's aptitudes and vocation in life, and that the fatalistic socially-entrenched application of the caste system is a distortion of the original truth.

One reason as I mentioned before is the case of fake caste certificates that the upper caste would identify themself not with their own caste but with a lower caste.
The Caste system, when branded as an evil and spoken as not being a part of hinduismin in the same breath is likely to get denounced by the religious leaders as well.
Since Indians are a minority race in USA, in the national marrow registry, there aren’t as many Indians registered and as a result, the possibility of a match is much less for patients of Indian origin.

He believed that the hearts of the upper castes could be changed to treat the lower castes equally and his entire struggle was directed towards bringing that change of heart.
Annihilation of Caste, he went too far in explaining the consequences which in my view was unnecessary and he extrapolated too much.
Representation of the backward castes in these places will definitely provide them the power and the means to uplift the community to which they belong.

Today the status of the Shudras, Untouchables, and other "scheduled castes," and the preferential policies that the Indian government has designed for their advancement ever since Independence, are sources of serious conflict, including suicides, murders, and riots, in Indian society.

In the typical Indian society, it’s considered a fairly evil thing to be arrogant.
There is nothing right/wrong with that per se, except for the fact that humility is a show of the fact that while one may have done quite a bit in one’s area of expertise to get where he/she is, perfection has never been a human trait.
Partly cultural and historic reasons like the caste sytem, social system(protector-client system), repeated invasions from foreign hordes etc creating a defensive collectivisation for survival.

We Indians are very proud of the traditions we follow and of our culture.What great a culture is...we teach our children to pray to god (36 crores of them) to bribe the god for even get passed in the exams and all INDIANS are shouting to end the corruption.
Caste system is destined to the dustbin of the history but one should not expect a dramatic reversal in a generation or two.

I wonder how Indian democracy works when a large portion of people know they are deliberately discriminated.
Interesting how some yellow people here like to talk about caste system when they have their own racial hirarchy system in their own nations regarding skin colour, race obcession, xenophobia, prejudice, worhshipping white people and have disdain towards interacial marriages...

Argentine and American investors were barred from holding due to matter of national security, and Indians were forbidden from even raising bonds in London or Hong Kong (for fear of them breaking through the social structure of the Brits).
Secondly there is no official evidence to show that the average lot of Indians improved during the British rule: the Brits themselves did the job of burning ALL official records (the buggers must have learnt something from the Nuremberg trials by then).

Any way, Caste system is structure of social communities, For example, Indian Subcontient never had slavery due to that they had already caste system for communities except that If king capatured other country  enemies(Including other country(region) king), and  he used as slaves.
Any way,  English Class system is similar to caste system, If born in a class system,  his generation  is always that class system even they had wealth or not because they carried their class system surname.

There might be very valid reasons for that, but I don’t think this kind of hatred is going to take us towards any kind of solution.
We definitely need a revolution but that is against the caste system and not against any particular caste.
This caste based name calling and hatred needs to end if we have to move towards any kind of social justice.

The caste system: it is generally held that the Buddha rejected the caste system in contrast to the other schools, which accepted the varna system.
Buddha said," There is an unborn, an unoriginated, an unmade, an uncompounded; were there not, O mendicants, there would be no escape from the world of the born, the unoriginated, the made and the compounded" (Udana 8.3).
Buddha's ideas about the caste sytem are identical to that discussed in Mahabharata/Gita.
