Coal is a fossil fuel extracted from the ground by deep mining, coal mining (open-pit mining or strip mining).
Coal is thought ultimately to derive its name from the Old English col but this actually meant charcoal at the time; coal was not mined prior to the late Middle Ages; i.e.
Coal is formed from plant remains that have been compacted, hardened, chemically altered, and metamorphosed by heat and pressure over geologic time.

Coal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Coals are usually mined wet and may be stored wet to prevent spontaneous combustion, so the carbon content of coal is quoted as both a 'as mined' and on a 'moisture free' basis.
Coal composition is determined by specific coal assay techniques, and is performed to quantify the physical, chemical and mechanical behaviour of the coal, including whether it is a good candidate for coking coal.
Coal was formed in swamp ecosystems which persisted in lowland sedimentary basins similar, for instance, to the peat swamps of Borneo today.

 Coal Industry Terms
Coke (coal): A solid carbonaceous residue derived from low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal from which the volatile constituents are driven off by baking in an oven at temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit so that the fixed carbon and residual ash are fused together.
In coals that were formed in persistent swamp environments, the floor is typically a bed of clay, known as "underclay," representing the soil in which the trees or other coal-forming swamp vegetation was rooted.
Coal analyses expressed on a moist basis are performed or adjusted so as to describe the data when the coal contains only that moisture which exists in the bed in its natural state of deposition, and when the coal has not lost any moisture due to drying.

Scope for application of GPS in Indian coal industry
Coal is the primary source of power generation in many countries of the world, and is the most abundant, widely distributed, safe and economical fossil fuel available to meet the escalating energy demand, providing around 33% of global primary energy needs and generating 36% of world’s electricity at present.
Coal continues to be the pre-dominant energy source in India contributing to about 63% of its total energy needs.
Coal production increased rapidly after nationalisation of coking coal mines in 1972 and non-coking coal mines in 1973 undertaken to ensure coal conservation and scientific development of coal resources in the country.

Regardless of the tribes' abilities to regulate surface coal mining activities on their lands, and regardless of previous or ongoing efforts to develop those abilities, OSMRE is and will continue to be the sole regulatory authority on Indian lands pending enactment of section 710 legislation and tribal assumption of primacy.
As explained in the preamble to the February 10, 1988, proposed rule, the inclusion of lands outside the reservation and not held in trust for or supervised by an Indian tribe was unintentional and was subsequently recognized by OSMRE to exceed the scope of the statutory definition of "Indian lands" in section 701(9) of SMCRA.
Section 710 applies to "Indian lands," and given the definition of Indian lands at section 701(9), is applicable to lands owned by or held in trust for individual Indians only if an interest in those lands is also held in trust for or supervised by an Indian tribe.

Scope for application of GPS in Indian Coal Industry
India’s coal production is expected to double at 600 million tonnes in the next decade and to realise this impressive growth, optimum utilisation of modern technologies like geographic information services (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS) in all facets of mineral exploration are essential.
Based on their performance, the same is being replicated in other big opencast coal mines in India notwithstanding the fact that it is a capital intensive project.
In a coal mine, these interruptions include shift changes, scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, events like shovel breakdowns or servicing, lunch breaks, and numerous other routine events that are all part of a typical shift.

The high ash content of Indian coal makes it imperative to wash it before it is supplied to the thermal power stations.
India's annual coal production is around 254 million tonnes per annum (TPA) and more than 85 percent of that is contributed by the seven divisions of state-owned Coal India Limited (CIL).
This is why CIL proposes to have coal washeries near the pit-heads before it is supplied to the large consumers such as thermal power plants all over India.
