Manas: History and Politics, Sonia Gandhi
Her aversion to politics has been described by Tariq Ali, who recounts that Sonia is said to have stated that she would have rather seen her children beg than enter into the maelstrom of Indian political life.
Since the Indian constitution, moreover, does not preclude people who have acquired citizenship by naturalization from holding the highest offices in the land, Sonia’s entry into politics became the pretext for offering the suggestion that a constitutional amendment would be required.
Whatever Sonia Gandhi’s eventual political fortunes, her own political presence is not calculated to breathe fresh life into Indian politics, though it may well be the training ground for the next generation of Nehrus.

Indian Politics Since the Formation of the UPA Government - Ashwini Chawala
Indian politics in the last one year: from the shock defeat of the previous NDA government, to the present UPA government completing more than a year in office ('surviving somehow', as some put it), Indian politics has undergone significant changes.
Indian politics at present shows that coalition politics is indispensable, with the need to maintain a consensus among allies the key to holding together a string of political parties, so diverse in their ideologies and policies, sometimes even opposing one another in the assembly elections.
Ensuring a political consensus is the mantra of Indian politics in the 21st century.

This disapproval is lapped up by many Indian Hindus because it seems to rhyme with their own theories of ‘scientific Hinduism’, which posits logic and mysticism as two sides of the same coin.
Their argument is that he calls Indian Hindus to be irrational and it is a racist description.
Moral of the story: as long as cricket and politics remain two sides of the same coin, you will be left craning your neck to catch a glimpse of blue in the sea of white.

CLOWNIFICATION OF INDIAN POLITICS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
A stage has come in Indian politics when elections have become a big joke; political parties and leaders are seen as entertainers; and political rallies, meetings etc. provide comic entertainment to all and sundry.
Anybody entering politics did so at a great personal cost and hence, he was held in great regard and no questions were raised about his capabilities, talent and qualifications.
Whether it be the Congress or BJP or any other Indian political party, the fact is that without any exceptions each of them is a collection of such rabble-rousers, entertainers and their sycophants.

Indian politics after Independence has to be seen in the context of the national struggle for freedom.
The Indian freedom struggle was marked by few characteristics that ingrained a certain ethos or spirit that has continued for more than the past half a century though interrupted intermittently- most powerfully in the six years under the shadow of the mushroom cloud that rose up in 1998.
indian nationalism, or the formation of its ethos is an ongoing process and i object to endorsement of the left’s own version of what indian nationalist ethos ought to be as *the* nation’s ethos.

Indian foreign policy accordingly is still committed to her traditional solidarity with the world’s national liberation movements.
However the Indian independence advocates of all political spectrum, with the communist and leftist third mainstream political movement in the forefront, are now pondering for how long New Delhi could resist the realistic outcome of the interaction between her globalization – oriented liberal economics and her pragmatic foreign policy.
Indian communists are very well aware of their historical responsibility to preempt the potential alignment of their country’s non-aligned foreign policy; they are careful to maintain their ideological and international solidarity relations with their comrades worldwide as well as with the national liberation movements, in particular the Palestinian national struggle.

One reason for the rapid rise of the BJP as a political outfit in the 1990s was due to Hindus being disillusioned by the Congress's supposed "pseudo-secular" politics that appeared soft on Muslims and pampered them.
Indeed, it is believed that even aggrieved Indian Muslims do not become terrorists, imbued as they are by the deep ethos of tolerance in India as well as political parties vying for their attention.

Although religion, caste and money dominate Indian "secular" politics, anti-Muslimism, Mosque,anti-Islamism and anti-Pakistanism have guided the special policies of the country so that domestic Muslims are kept under constant “check” by denying what is legitimately their due in national development.
One finds the appalling the efforts of the Indian media to promote the agenda of the policy makers in New Delhi and other state capitals to kick the Muslims as hard as it is possible with actions of nepotism, vengeance and diverting the national attention to the so-called terrorism.
But the election reversals or victories don't necessarily reflect the political undercurrents in elections and the popular votes as such cannot be taken for their acceptance of Left support for the Congress-led government at the Centre.
