Indian summer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Indian summer (also called Old Wives' summer in the United Kingdom) is a name given to a period of sunny, warm weather in autumn, not long before winter.
The dates for Indian summer are very inexact due to the enormous variations in climatic patterns throughout each hemisphere.
Indeed, two of the three other known uses of the term "Indian summer" in the 18th century are from accounts kept by two Army officers leading retaliation expeditions against Indians for raids on settlers in Ohio and Indiana (1790), and Pennsylvania (1794).

Indian Summer often coincides with the period of peak fall colours across the deciduous forests of northeastern North America, thus making the time one in which to savour the remaining bounty of colour before the muted winter tones of gray, brown and white descend across the land.

William and Mary Morris suggest it came about because the word “Indian” had been adopted as a term among early colonists to describe something false, or a poor imitation of the real thing, as in Indian corn or Indian tea.
