Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, a U.S. national lakeshore authorized by Congress in 1966, is located in Northwest Indiana.
The national lakeshore runs for nearly 25 miles (40 km) along southern Lake Michigan, bordered by Michigan City, Indiana on the east, and Gary, Indiana on the west.
The Indiana Dunes is unique in that it contains both arctic and boreal plants (such as the bearberry) alongside desert plants (such as the prickly pear cactus).

The national lakeshore’s jurisdiction extends 300 feet off the shore of Lake Michigan, except for the area in and next to Indiana Dunes State Park.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will implement a ban on personal watercraft along its Lake Michigan shoreline effective April 21, 2001.
Under the final rule issued last April, the national lakeshore was given a two-year grace period to determine if the regulated use of personal watercraft could be authorized.
