IMDb > Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Almost anyone we ask say that Temple of Doom is their least favorite, and the worst in the Jones trilogy.
Temple of Doom had so much to live up to after the first film, and instead of trying to re-create Raiders (something I feel Crusade did), Lucas and Spielberg decided to take the franchise in a new direction.

Indiana Jones was born Henry Walden Jones Junior to Scottish-born professor of Medieval literature, Dr. Henry Jones Sr.
Jones and Remy then transferred to the French Army, and Jones worked as an intelligence officer, vied with Ernest Hemingway for the affections of a young nurse, and worked as a translator for the Treaty of Versailles, seeing the war come to its conclusion but laying down the groundwork for a second conflict.
Indiana Jones, "Obtainer of Rare Antiquities," is modeled after the strong-jawed heroes of the matinee serials and pulp magazines that Lucas and Spielberg enjoyed in their childhoods, such as the Republic Pictures serials, and Doc Savage.

While Doom is a bit gloomy, puts children in danger, and confines its action largely to one spot, it's still quite entertaining.
Everything bad in Temple of Doom is the fault of the insipid script, and everything good belongs to Spielberg, Ford, and that funny little Asian kid.
Set years before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is sillier, darkly violent and a bit dumbed down, but still great fun.

DVD Review: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is not anywhere near the level of greatness that was achieved by Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Temple of Doom takes place before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones has such a strong bond with the boy that his complete absense in Raiders makes the second film seem even more out of place.
Temple of Doom is filled with a lot more humor than the first film and this is necessary because the story itself is much darker.

'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom'
This may well be the public's reaction to Steven Spielberg's exuberantly tasteless and entertaining ''Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,'' which opens today at Loews Astor Plaza and other theaters, and which already is causing a ruckus because of its PG rating.
It not only introduces Indiana Jones and Willie, who loathe each other on first sight (the better to fall in love later), but it also ends with a great barroom brawl in which a priceless diamond gets lost in a shower of similarly shaped ice cubes.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) Movie Review by Scott Weinberg - eFilmCritic.com at The Movie Insider   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom does have many worthwhile components in common with the original, so it still manages to be quite the entertaining movie.
Temple of Doom was a no-brainer sequel, in that it's clearly a movie with a massive built-in audience, but my theory is that with a quality script - as opposed to this 'kitchen-sink' approach employed by Lucas' golfing buddies - it could have possibly approached the classic status of its predecessor.
As it stands, Temple of Doom is no more than an entertaining adventure flick, but given the quality of the film before it (to say nothing of the man behind the camera), this one should have been a classic.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," easily the worst and most disappointing installment in the phenomenally successful Indiana Jones trilogy, isn't entirely awful, but comes precariously close.
Unfortunately, Temple of Doom is my least favorite of the Indiana Jones trilogy, but on the other hand, that doesn't mean that it's bad.
While this movie is by far the worst Indiana Jones movie (the other two got a 10.0 and a 9.0 from me) "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is still a great deal more fun than most movies out there.
