The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation was formed Feb. 9, 1909, when 328 acres of farmland northwest of Downtown Indianapolis was purchased by Fisher and his partners Jim Allison, Frank Wheeler and Arthur Newby.
That rift resulted in controversy prior to the 1979 race when the Speedway rejected the entries of the CART teams on the grounds they were not in "good standing" with USAC, which sanctioned the Indianapolis 500.
CART drivers returned to Indianapolis for the first time in four years when, in 2000, two weeks of the CART schedule were opened up to allow its teams to compete.

Beginning with the 1950 Indianapolis 500, Phillippe was an announcer for every race at the speedway through this year's Brickyard 400 in August, track officials said.
He also worked in radio and television in Indianapolis, was manager of Butler's student radio station and was public address announcer for the school's home basketball and football games for 35 years.
