The two major sources that I am using to study Indianola in the pre-Civil Rights period are Hortense Powdermaker's After Freedom: A Cultural Study in the Deep South and John Dollard's Caste and Class in a Southern Town both of which were written during the 1930's.
Indianola is also personally significant to me because my mother grew up there, and I have been visiting the town since I was an infant.
