Topic: Indicial notation

  Small Deformation Elasticity
The use of indicial notation to represent elasticity equations is in general a more advanced topic for continuum mechanics.
Indicial notation is really a short hand method to write scalars, vectors and higher order quantities known as tensors, without having to write the full blown representation as we did for the vector above.
Although at first the use of indicial notation seems complex and confusing, once you are able to understand the basic rules (such as those presented above and in what follows) indicial notation actually becomes a clearer way to present complicated equations than writing them out explicitly.

transformation in a self-contained chapter, and the interrelation of direct notation, indicial notation, and matrix operations is clearly presented.
The concept of tensors is introduced through the idea of linear transformation in a self-contained chapter, and the interrelation of direct notation, indicial notation, and matrix operations is clearly presented.
Earlier in the text, the authors state that they will use the notation U for any deformation gradient that is symmetric; subsequent text clearly shows that they are presuming that a symmetric deformation gradient a stretch, which is false.

Boldface versus indicial notation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Sometimes the boldface notation is loosely called vector or dyadic notation, while the indical notation is called tensor notation (although vectors can be written in indicial notation too).
The disadvantage of the indicial notation is that the physical meaning of a term becomes clear only after an examination of the indices.

Indicial notation is known by several different names, including Einstein notation and Einstein summation, as Einstein created this method of mathematical shorthand.
This handout was prepared for a class in fluid mechanics at Stanford University.

x, y, z) or using the indicial notation that is presented in BSL.
It is therefore worthwhile to learn the indicial notation and become comfortable using it throughout the course.
Note that preceding the expression with a summation sign for each unique index and inserting a unit tensor for each index that is not repeated will yield the familiar indicial notation used in BSL.

You will be expected to know definitions and to manipulate vector equations in indicial notation.
It was one of the first texts which combined classical continuum mechanics with thermodynamics (entropy inequality).
The first half of the text gives notation and proves the Polar Identity (generalization of the delta-epsilon identity), Spectral Decomposition of a Symmetric Linear Operator on a subset S on a Euclidean Space V, Positive Definite Operators and their Square Roots, Polar Decomposition Theorem, and the Representation Thm for orthogonal Operators.
