Indigenous Australians are the first human inhabitants of the Australian continent and its nearby islands, believing they have been in occupation since the beginning of time and continuing their presence during European settlement.
Indigenous Australians were given the right to vote in Commonwealth elections in Australia in November 1963, and in state elections shortly after, with the last state to do this being Queensland in 1965.
As at June 2001, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated the total resident indigenous population to be 458,520 (2.4% of Australia's total), 90% of whom identified as Aboriginal, 6% Torres Strait Islander and the remaining 4% being of dual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parentage.

Indigenous people were known to help European explorers, such as John King (explorer), who lived with a tribe for two and a half months after the ill fated Burke and Wills expedition of 1861.
Fire-stick farming is a term coined by Australian archeologist Rhys Jones in 1969 to describe the practice of Indigenous Australians where fire was used regularly to burn vegetation to facilitate hunting and to change the composition of plant and animal species in an area.

Indigenous occupants of positions with duties that largely involve dealing with Indigenous policy and/or Indigenous clients feel they are overlooked for mainstream higher duties because their skills are seen as relevant only to Indigenous issues.

There was much opposition by railway unions against the transport and export of Mary Kathleen uranium, and in 1977, the Australian Council of Trade Unions called for a ban on the export of uranium.
Michael Mansell, an Australian Aboriginal activist, summed up the prospects of Aboriginal people in my country when he stated: "The most crucial prerequisite to empowering Aboriginal people is their desire and capacity to put an end to their disadvantaged situation and take control of their own lives.

 Indigenous Australians grants and funding
A national network of 13 Indigenous Land Management Facilitators has been established to assist Indigenous communities to prepare applications to the suite of programmes under the Natural Heritage Trust.
The Indigenous Protected Areas Programme, a component of the National Reserve Systems Programme, provides funding to Indigenous organisations and communities to establish and manage protected areas on Indigenous owned land and to establish cooperative (joint) management arrangements between Indigenous groups and the relevant government nature conservation agencies on publicly owned protected areas.
Funding is available for State and Territory Agencies and community groups, including Indigenous groups, to purchase land for the establishment and management of ecologically significant protected areas for addition to Australia's terrestrial National Reserve System.

Amid reports that at least 40 British museums are preparing to hand their collections of ancestral remains back to Australian Aborigines and other Indigenous peoples, the government has just set up a working group to consider changing the law to make it easier for some museums to release their collections.
Although at least 100 million of the world’s 250 million Indigenous peoples live in Commonwealth countries, there is no Commonwealth commitment to inquiring into or improving their conditions of life.
One of these is the UN Human Rights Commission (HRC), which noted last year that the Australian government’s mandatory sentencing of juveniles raised "a serious issue of compliance" with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
