Police said at least 35 activists of CPI-M and seven activists of INPT were killed either by the ultras or by political activists.
The All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) has called for a boycott of the election and NLFT, which according to CPI-M is the armed organisation of INPT, is intimidating voters.

The INPT chief, who is also an MLA, delivered his speech in the meeting of the UN Working Group of Indigenous People in Geneva held between July 22 to 26.
Hrankhawl's views were provocative and devoid of facts on Tripura's accession with India in 1949 and could disturb the communal harmony and peace of the state, Sarkar said.

In 1983 and 1988, the seat was consecutively won by former Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti leader Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl, though in 1993, CPM candidate Hashmei Reang managed to scrape through by a thin margin.
