It is located about 2,800 km North-East of Yakutsk and 120 km South-West from the ulus capital, Belaya Gora.
The settlement is reachable either by Indigirka or by winter road (zimnik) from Verkhoyansk.

In the 17th century, the Yukaghir still occupied vast territories in the north-east of Siberia, from the Lena River to the Anadyr (from the west to the east) and from the arctic shore to the upper reaches of the Yana, Indigirka and Kolyma rivers (from the north to the south).
In revenge, on the Indigirka, the Russians threw themselves against the hostility of the Yukaghir clans, who took flight, nevertheless, frightened by the Russian artillery.
It is the name that the Russians decided to use to refer to a group of tribes they encountered in the course of the conquest of the north-east of Siberia in the 17th century, in the regions of three large rivers of the North-East: the Yana, the Indigirka, and the Kolyma.

I know that the distance straight away south from the point where the ship was lost is less—I think so now—to the Indigirka River than it would be in a southwesterly course.
