November 1994, following the amalgamation of the former Municipal districts of The United Shire of Beechworth, the Shire of Chiltern, the Shire of Rutherglen, and the Shire of Yackandandah.
As an aside, for those of you that don't know - Indigo Shire is the southern half of the rural donut that surrounds the urban area of Albury/Wodonga.
Indigo retained one of the lowest rating structures of all of the new Municipal districts due to the inherently low rating structures of the former Municipalities.

There is no logic to this scheme Indigo Shires 10-year capital works program shows special charges for works in and surrounding Chilterns business area Conness St to be $153,000, whereas the footpath replacement in Yackandandahs High St is exempt from this special charges scheme.
Now Indigo Shire is planning to let Chilterns courthouse (built in the 1860s and still with original furniture and fittings intact) and take the Athenaeum Annex (museum) and use it for a library, all because they are refurbishing the memorial hall.
And regress to last year when Indigo Shire paid a landscape architect big dollars to design a streetscape for Chiltern avenues of frost tender palm trees was the result, and nobody asked us if we wanted to become another town of palms and pongs.

The Alpine Shire takes in some 5,500 square kms and was formed from the shires of Mytleford and Bright which were amalgamated in November1994.
Also land from the previous Yackandandah, Beechworth and Omeo Shires are now part of this large Alpine Shire.
Taking in some of this states major tourist locations and also having a large industrial sector the shire is a major link in the state's development and future.

The Indigo shire covers 2019sq km taking in Brimin, Wahgunyah, Tangambalanga, Sandy Creek, Kergunyah, Rutherglen, Chiltern, Beechworth and Stanley, just to name a few.
The modification to the statement is to introduce provisions with references to rural industry and unforeseen large scale development in appropriate locations.
Shame on you, Indigo council, for not giving the wider community the courtesy of the knowledge of the modifications to the statement that has the potential to affect all of the 2019sq km in our shire.
