Indirect fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Indirect fire is the use of artillery to fire at targets out of the crew's line of sight, by firing in a high arc out to long distances and/or over blocking terrain.
Throughout most of the history of indirect-fire artillery the aiming was done on the basis of pre-calculated firing tables, which took account of wind velocity in addition to the relative position of the enemy and allowed crews to aim their guns by means look-up tables rather than their own mathematical calculations.
When digital computers were first invented their primary use was to automate the calculations for firing tables, and thus in the anglophone world the machines came to be known as "computers" as well.

 Indirect Fire
Unobserved fire is fire for which the points of impact or burst are not observed.
These fires neutralize, canalize, or destroy enemy attack formations or defenses; obscure the enemy's vision or otherwise inhibit his ability to acquire and attack friendly targets; and destroy targets deep in the enemy rear with long-range rocket or missile fires.
Indirect fires are simply not accurate enough to provide the close-in fires needed to accomplish the majority of the missions required of the maneuver.

Infantry Magazine: Indirect fire the close fight: the 60mm mortar
The result is that units have failed to integrate indirect fires into chance contacts with the enemy, thus allowing the enemy to break contact on their own terms.
A former senior brigade fire support observer/ controller at JRTC stated that the failure to adjust indirect fires onto a fast-moving enemy when contact is made contributes to the 7:1 loss ratio between the blue force (BLUFOR) and the opposing force (OPFOR) at JRTC.
Leaders should include the 60mm indirect fire into all platoon live fires and the live fires should incorporate chance contact where the plan allows for the utilization of mortars by the FO and also the lead team leader or squad leader.

Fire support Soldiers would fill the positions as mortarmen, similar to 13B cannoneers, and mortar fire direction centers' (FDCs) Soldiers would be staffed similar to the 13E MOS.
My point is that those who specialize in indirect fire support should be charged with managing, training, equipping, and resourcing all fire support, not just a portion of it.
Fire supporters are committed to support the close fight, I would presume our infantry brethren would greatly welcome our desire to provide our indirect fire expertise and manning to make the task force a more ready and capable fighting force.

A: The scattered indirect fire strength is added to the spotted indirect fire strength for a combined total before being divided by the number of target units in the hex.
But in the case of town hexes, Direct Fire attacks must be made against all spotted units in the hex with one combined defense factor, with any unspotted units in the town hex being ignored in that attack.
In this case, the total direct fire attack strength (including the strength of the units stacked on top of the fort) would be applied twice; once against the units on top of the fortification and once for the fortification itself.

Luckily indirect fire weapons like the Grenade Launcher always have very large explosive range so you do not need to be quite as acurate as you would with a direct fire weapon.

Indirect fire seems to be the only option, since that's the only way to get "area effect".
The problem, of course, is that moving vehicles apparently can't shoot indirect fire missions, and aircraft can't stop moving mid-path.
My first thought is to suggest a (hopefully minor) change: indirect fire units that are not emplaceable should be able to fire indirect on the move.

Defending the BSA With Indirect Fire
The most effective combat multiplier in the defense of the BSA was indirect fire from the 2-8th Direct Support Field Artillery Battalion.
Although Army doctrine states that fire support in the rear is the responsibility of the brigade fire support officer (FSO), a full-time FSE is essential to the BSA.
The purpose of these fires was to enable continuous CSS operations by preventing the unconditional use of the buffer zone by the opposing force (OPFOR).
