Individual Thought Patterns was made to be a bit different next to the previous release, sort of sprung out from what Human started off with - needless to say Human never reached this far as their 5th one.
Individual Thought Patterns is one of the most spectacular albums the scene has seen, though the following Symbolic shows qualities even beyond this.
I consider Individual Thought Patterns as a must have album.

I see the 1993 album Individual Thought Patterns to be the best of all the releases and ironically was the first album I ever bought by them as well.
But all of their albums are absolutely killer, not a bad one in the bunch.
It was obvious that Death was going in a more progressive direction with the album seminal album Human, but it was Individual Thought Patterns that really made them stand out even more.

If it wasn't for his efforts all these years there would be no DEATH to be raving over.
Individual Thought Patterns is a bit more technically structured an album than was Human but also a bit less heavy due to the sound engineering (this doesn't mean it isn't heavy because it is!).
Though I may favor Human slightly more for it's more rough-edged feel, Individual Thought Patterns is by no means an album to ignore.

Just skip ahead to about midway through "Within the Mind" to hear a classic harmonized riff obviously written by Chuck that would be a staple of his songwriting.
The sound heard here will not change dramatically until Symbolic, so it's hard to pick a favorite between this, Human, and Individual Thought Patterns.
This puppy was my first ever Death album and a great introduction to death metal for me. The title track is possibly their best track ever with its plethora of quality riffs and Chuck's cool new singing style (I love the beginning - "I don't mean to dwell, but I can't help myself").

Chuck still has his solos performed and they are as magnificent as they have been from day one.
The song arrangement is the problem, it doesn't get the pieces well together and the result can be heard on "Individual?".

In chronological order, the Death albums are: "Scream Bloody Gore", "Leprosy", "Spiritual Healing", "Human", "Individual Thought Patterns", "Symbolic" and "The Sound Of Perseverance".
The latter was the last Death album, though technically the band never disbanded after releasing it.
