Topic: Individual psychology

Individual differences psychology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is distinguished from other aspects of psychology in that although psychology is ostensibly a study of individuals, modern psychologists invariably study groups.
Individual difference psychologists usually express their interest in individuals while studying groups by seeking dimensions shared by all individuals but upon which individuals differ.
Individual differences typically includes the study of intelligence (trait) and IQ and the study of personality.

Charles Ellwood: Prolegomena to Social Psychology:  III: The Nature and Task of Social Psychology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Thus, individual psychology has a perfect right to consider the psychical life of the group in order to throw light upon the individual mind ; while social psychology must study the individual, because the whole with which it deals is a complex made up of individual elements.
Individualism has assumed to be able fully to explain society from the nature of the individual; but gradually it has been perceived that society itself must be regarded as an organic, functioning unity before the social process can be understood.
While social psychology must rest upon the organic nature of society as the presupposition of all its investigations, it must distinguish carefully between the fact of the organic nature of society and analogies with biological organisms which may as often be misleading as helpful.

Individual Psychology is an approach of understanding human behavior and working with individuals based largely on the teachings of Alfred Adler.
Individual Psychology stresses that people are social beings, thus most behavior is related to interacting with one or more individuals.
Individual Psychology is also based on the idea that individuals make assumptions about life and set goals for themselves.

 Evolutionary Psychology
Without this separation, the individual’s "I" will be identified with the thoughts, emotional states and sensations that arise—it will be absorbed in and participate in them; it will not stand outside, observe and ultimately be able to manage them; the individual will continue to be her thoughts and emotional responses.
In self-remembering the individual simultaneously is aware that she is present and has the aim of developing a new "I" while also being aware of her physical, emotional and mental states.
The individual will see that humans who continue to be guided only by their pre-existing reward and motivation systems are as absurd as a wind-up toy soldier that has run into a wall and fallen onto its back, but continues to march, on and on.

Basic principles of Individual Psychology - Alfred Adler Institute of San Francisco
Instead he may individualize more and more instead of developing in the direction of belonging to a larger unit--the development of functioning outside of the total, against a personal "complement," where personal prestige counts more than progress of mankind.
Individualization becomes isolation, which is the beginning of the neurotic attitude.
If there were no choice, the individual would be inexorably submitted to his inheritance, environment, and the thousands of factors that influence his life; he would be entirely determined and therefore never could use any creative ability.

 Educational Psychology Interactive: Motivation
The following definitions of motivation were gleaned from a variety of psychology textbooks and reflect the general consensus that motivation is an internal state or condition (sometimes described as a need, desire, or want) that serves to activate or energize behavior and give it direction (see Kleinginna and Kleinginna, 1981a).
Daniels (2001) suggests that Maslow's ultimate conclusion that the highest levels of self-actualization are transcendent in their nature may be one of his most important contributions to the study of human behavior and motivation.
The individual with a goal-internalization orientation is more task-oriented (e.g., humanistic or social cognition theory) whereas the person with an internal self-concept orientation is more influenced by individual constructions of the ideal self (humanistic or psychoanalytic theory).

From the Philosopher   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The science of individual psychology began to develop after the enrichment of the curriculum was well on its way, so that the two developments went on in parallel lines touching almost not at all.
The human mind does not learn in a vacuum; the facts presented for learning, to be grasped, must have some relation to the previous experience of the individual or to his present needs; learning proceeds from the concrete to the general, not from the general to the particular.
Every individual is a little different from every other individual, not alone in his general capacity and character; the differences extend to rather minute abilities and characteristics, and no amount of discipline will eradicate them.

 BBC - h2g2 - Alfred Adler's individual psychology - A854291   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Twin and adoption studies of the 1980's showed people are indeed 'radically individual', as Adler maintained.
However, Adler's more lasting contribution to psychology will prove to have been in insisting on radical individuality, on developmental stories that merit careful testing, and on addressing aspects of human personality that Freud gloomily packaged as thanatos and then left in an eerie limbo.
Adler granted others the possibility of what he might without immodesty have observed in himself: will, achievement-striving, a strong sense of responsibility, assertiveness, self-help and 'personal interest' alongside soul, sympathy, tender-mindedness, idealism and 'social interest'.

Alfred Adler in Personality Synopsis at ALLPSYCH Online
However, after growing disagreements he left with several other theorists in 1911, starting his own group originally named the 'Society for Free Psychoanalytic Research.' It is suspected that this name was meant as an attack on Freud's stubbornness to accepting disagreements and challenge to his theories.
The name was later changed to 'Individual Psychology,' perhaps as a means to differentiate Adler as an independent theorist in his search for overcoming his perceived inferiority.
According to Adler's theory, each of us is born into the world with a sense of inferiority.
