Threats - Pakistan - India Intelligence Agencies
Pakistan feared that India might repeat a 1948 incident that curtailed the water supply as a means of coercion.
Pakistan's army had been able to withstand Indian pressure, but a continuation of the fighting would only have led to further losses and ultimate defeat for Pakistan.
The Pakistan Army responded with threatening countermovements, and in early 1987 there was serious concern that war might break out.

 Indo-Pakistan War of Independence
One of the treaty's clauses implied that each nation was expected to come to the assistance of the other in the event of a threat to national security such as that occurring in the 1965 war with Pakistan.
Unable to deter India's activities in the eastern sector, on December 3, 1971, Pakistan launched an air attack in the western sector on a number of Indian airfields, including Ambala in Haryana, Amritsar in Punjab, and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir.
The third war between India and Pakistan took place between November 22 (when the Indian's began providing active artillery support to the seperatists) and Dec 17, 1971.

Pakistan's defeat in the 1971 war led to the creation of Bangladesh.
A group of Indian statesmen successfully argued that it would be cheaper to fight another war with Pakistan than to absorb almost 10 million refugees.
India and Pakistan were at odds over the state of Jammu and Kashmir that had been, in effect, an independent monarchy in British India.

PREVENT NUCLEAR WAR WITH GROUND POWER
The best place to start however, is the 1971 Indo/Pakistani War.
The war began with Pakistan persecuting millions of people in the nation formerly called "East Pakistan".
By allowing it to appear that Israel created the Indian bomb, that Israel was considering an attack on Pakistan from India, and indeed, that Arafat himself warned the Pakistanis about the impending attack, Pakistan identifies itself with Arab aspirations.

 Assam Info
The northern border of Assam has been insecure since 1959, when the Chinese invaded the region in the Sino-Indian War, and it ceased to be a neighbor of Pakistan with the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 as a result of the third Indo-Pakistan War.
When India and Pakistan became independent in 1947, Assam was divided between the two countries, most of Assam going to India.
Rule over Assam was contested until 1826, when the British took control.

Indiainfo.com -> News -> South Asia -> PPP condemns Musharraf remarks on war report
Islamabad: The opposition Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Tuesday criticized General Pervez Musharraf's remarks at a New York press conference, where he described the surrender by Pakistani Army generals in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 as a "political debacle".
Thereafter, the commission conclusively said that several generals needed to be court martialled or punished for their acts of omission and commission during the 1971 war.
He said that it was ironic that such an accusation should have been made at a time when the nation was demanding an explanation about "the disgraceful revelations" in the recently published the Hamoodur Rehman Commission (HRC) report, "exposing the cowardliness and moral crimes committed by a coterie of army officers in former East Pakistan."

 The Battle of Chamb-1971
Capture of Akhnur by Pakistan could lead to an easy advance towards the Jammu Srinagar Road at least theoretically, although in 1971 the Pakistan army was in no position to carry out such an ambitious offensive.
Symbolically speaking it was this battle which sustained the morale of the army in West Pakistan and provided much needed credibility to sustain and preserve the armyÕs image in the wake of the traumatic events of December 1971.
For 1971 war also strictly keeping the facts in mind almost half of casualties sustained by the army on the western front were borne by the valiant 23 Division.

 Battle of Barapind-Jarpal 16 Dec 1971
In 1971 this unit was launched in Chamb against an Indian Squadron equipped with AMX-13 tanks which had no potential to oppose the six to one tank superiority concentrated against them by Pakistan in Chamb during Operation Grand Slam.
Unfortunately instead of dispassionately analysing our previous wars, there has been a marked tendency in our country, that motivates military historians to rationalise all our failures by citing the excuse that we were outnumbered and all the battles where our military commanders blundered were ones in which defeat or failure was inevitable.
Clausewitz clearly and repeatedly stated many times in his book 'On War' that a strategic reserve that had no bearing on the decisive battle was a negation of the whole idea of having a strategic reserve.

However, those knowledgeable about the Afghan scene know that guns are not the only means of winning tribal wars.
War and strife have brought much misery to the region.

The Breguet Alize & Fairey Gannet
The Alize was used for reconnaissance and patrol during India's 1961 occupation of Portugese Goa, and was also used for ASW patrol during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, during which one Alize was shot down by a Pakistani F-104 Starfighter.
One of the turboprop engines could be shut down for economical cruise flight, and if one of the engines failed the aircraft would not suffer from the handling problems associated with asymmetric power.
Various nations had experimented with such double engines during the war, but with little success.

Twentieth Century Atlas - Death Tolls
Vietnam War: Most historians of the Second Indochina War concern themselves primarily with the American Phase of the conflict, 1965-73; however, many do not specify whether their estimated death tolls cover only this phase of the war or the whole thing.
Dan Smith: The War Atlas (1983) does not give a specific number, but Algeria is filled with the color which indicates that more than a million died in all wars fought between 1945 and 1982.
The population explosion of the 20th Century is so pervasive that populations have continued to climb during most of the bad times listed on this page; however, the intensity of the Mexican Revolution is such that the counted population of Mexico actually declined from 15,160,369 in 1910 to 14,334,780 in 1921.

 Indo-Pak war 1971 : HindustanTimes.com
The Indo-Pak war of 1971 had reasons much beyond Jammu and Kashmir as Pakistan failing to have its administrative control over East Pakistan resorted to brutal force on the population leading a mass exodus of people from East Pakistan to India, particularly West Bengal.
The decisive win for Indian forces in the 1971 resulting in the disemberment of Pakistan and liberation of Bangladesh, with over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers as prisoners and over one-third of Pakistani territory, India was in the most advantageous position to settle all the outstanding issues including Kashmir with Pakistan, once and for all.
In the Eastern sector the Pakistan army surrendered to India's might and Indian army took more that 90,000 Pakistani troops as prisoners of war.
