For an indologist of the nineteenth-century, matters were relatively simple: before the period of what is generally called "classical Hinduism" or the like, Indian culture was Indo-Aryan and at the same time Vedic.
On the other hand, to the Western classical indologist, "Vedic" in the sphere of linguistics and literature still has a fixed connotation-namely as referring to the corpus of texts already mentioned and to the language found in this.
But throughout history there have been other definitions, to the Western classical indologist redefinitions of the term, allowing individual texts which are not Vedic by the definition mentioned above to be subsumed by, or appended to, the traditions of hallowed ancient texts, thus letting them partake of the sacrality and authoritativeness attributed to the Vedas.

Some Western Indologists and Indian ‘secularists’ are resorting to desperate tactics to save their discipline from collapsing.
It was Indologist W.W. Hunter who said : “Scholarship is warmed with the holy flame of Christian zeal.” And Bishop Caldwell, who created the Aryan-Dravidian theory, admitted that his linguistic theories were of “vast political and moral importance”— meaning they served British colonial and Christian missionary interests.
That Harvard Indologist Michael Witzel and an independent writer Steve Farmer have to save India and Indians from being corrupted by devilish ‘natives’ and ‘heathens’ like N.S. Rajaram, N. Jha and Shrikant Talageri is pure colonial-missionary conceit that revives the White Man's Burden.

Indian theories about the atom are greatly abstract and enmeshed in philosophy as they were based on logic and not on personal experience or experimentation.
Thus the Indian theories lacked an empirical base, but in the words of A.L. Basham, the veteran Australian Indologist "they were brilliant imaginative explanations of the physical structure of the world, and in a large measure, agreed with the discoveries of modern physics."
The school of philosophy which contributed to the development of ideas about the atom was the Vaisheshika school.
