Indology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Indology is a name given by indologists to the academic study of the history, languages, and cultures of South Asia.
Thus, Indology is the intellectual pursuit of all things Indic, with a focus on the interpretation of the past.
Indology would not typically include the study of the contemporary economy, government, or politics of South Asia, except insofar as these sometimes express issues that are deeply embedded in South Asian history, and may be illuminated by indological methods and insights.

"Indology" is a term rarely used in the English language, but on the Continent, especially in areas where education bears the stamp of German academic life, it is fairly common.
Indology is currently classified as a 'B class' major, which means in practice that it can be studied initially only in conjunction with some other, 'A class' major.
For this reason, entry to the first year of the Indology course is permitted without a special entrance examination.

The background to the development of the Western "Indology" as an academic subject is in German romanticism of the early 19th century, and the University of Bonn was the first Western academic institution to establish a chair for Sanskrit studies in 1818.
Together with the establishment of the Indology Department in 1955 Paul Hacker (1913-1979) was called to Bonn as Kirfel's successor and director of the Department.
The German indology of the 19th and early 20th centuries was predominantly limited to the research of Sanskrit and its rich corpus of literature.

The History of Indology and Comparative Philology in Germany, 1750-1958
Whereas British and French interest in Indology paralleled their colonial enterprise in India and the consequent need to understand the literary, legal-religious and philosophical traditions of the sub-continent, the German Indological interest was altogether different.
ABSTRACT: The history of Sanskrit studies (Indology) at the University of Leipzig is closely connected with the names of the four scholars who successively held the chair between 1841 and 1958: Hermann Brockhaus (1806-1877; Professor in Leipzig 1841-1877), Ernst Windisch (1844-1918; 1877-1918), Johannes Hertel (1872-1950; 1919-1937) and Friedrich Weller (1889-1980; 1937-1958).
Another critical step in Indology's growth in Berlin was the acquisition of the extensive Chambers manuscript collection in 1842 and their cataloguing by Albrecht Weber in the late 1840s.

Popular does not mean cheap and in the history of indology, there are masterpieces of research and presentation that are equally scholarly and accessible, thanks to the talent of an author.

And the lack of communication between the compartments is the greatest failure of indology as a whole.
