The first rupiah was introduced in 1945 in those parts of the Netherlands Indies under the control of Republic of Indonesia.
The Riau islands and the Indonesian half of New Guinea (Irian Barat) had their own variants of the rupiah, but these were subsumed into the national rupiah in 1964 and 1971 respectively (see Riau rupiah and West New Guinea rupiah).
Rampant inflation caused, on December 13, 1965, the new rupiah to be introduced at a rate of 1000 old rupiah to one new rupiah.

The Indonesian government turned to the International Monetary fund in October 1997 for assistance in surmounting its economic difficulties which included a substantial depreciation of the Indonesian Rupiah, rising inflation, and a collapsing banking system.
In July 1997, the Indonesian rupiah began to weaken and Indonesia was forced to widen its trading band to 12 from 8 percent.
The Indonesian government promulgated a new regulation in May 1998 which make it easier for labor organizations to register as trade unions, and several new unions have formed to join the Federation of All-Indonesian Trade Unions (FSPSI), which was the sole government-recognized union prior to 1998.

The rupiah hurtled lower on reports that Indonesian corporates were resorting to rupiah payments on U.S. dollar debt, while renewed political jitters added another broadside.
The Indonesian currency ended the day at 11,600 to the dollar, vs. the opening of 10,000 and Tuesday's close of 9,850.

Since Indonesian legislators drove president Abdurrahman Wahid from office in July 2001, the rupiah's US dollar exchange rate has strengthened by more than 20 percent from 11,000 to the 8,670 it touched on Monday, a one-year high.
Those currencies remain in their established post-financial-crisis trading zones, while the rupiah is still far stronger than its usual benchmark of 10,000.
From that perspective, the rupiah has merely been closing a wide value gap with the currencies of its neighbors that, at least in the case of Philippines, don't stand that far above Indonesia on the political economy hit parade.

     The rupiah stood at 12,000/12,500 to the U.S. dollar in Asian trading Thursday, but had lost even more value during the day and, at one point, was at 15,000 to the dollar..
     "This is expected to increase this year because at least one million people will lose their jobs in the wake of the crisis." Even that figure may be low, according to Indonesian labor union officials, who estimate the number could rise as high as 10 million.

One way of dissuading them from recounting your money is to keep it out of their reach and / or put elastic bands around the counted piles.
Because even a US$100 worth of Rupiah is a mighty large "wad" of notes in Rp50,000's.
