Longman's Beaked Whale, commonly also called the Indo-Pacific Beaked Whale either has the specific name Indopacetus pacificus or Mesoplodon pacificus, depending whether the animal is classified as a mesoplodont whale or not.
The features of this unknown whale - in particular its length and well-defined crease between the melon and the beak - do not match those of any other member of the Ziphiid family in the area and do match what little has been inferred about Longman's Beaked Whale.
The species was originally described by Longman in 1926 from a skull found on a beach in Australia in 1882 and placed in the genus Mesoplodon.

Beaked whale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They are one of the least-known families of large mammals : several species have only been described in the last two decades, and it is entirely possible that more remain as yet undiscovered.
Three of these, Indopacetus, the Hyperoodon and the Mesoplodon, are united in a single subfamily, the Hyperoodontidae.
The known beaked whales range in size from about 3.4 metres to almost 13 metres, and can weigh anywhere between 1 and 15 tonnes.

On an unidentified beaked whale found stranded in Kagoshima
Only possible species that can not be rejected is Longman's beaked whale ( Indopacetus pacificus) known only from two skulls (Longman, 1926; Azzaroli, 1968), and the estimated body length based on the skull size of Indopacetus pacificus was 25 feet (Longman, 1926).
The skull and mandibles of the Kagoshima specimen are extremely similar to those of the type specimen of Longman's beaked whale, based on the photographs and descriptions in Longman's original description (1926) and Azzaroli (1968).
The specimen in question was identified as Indopacetus pacificus (Moore, 1968).

Natural History: Alive and whale: a missing cetacean resurfaces in the Tropics - Findings
He considered M. pacificus not only a valid species but one distinct enough from the other eleven species of Mesoplodon to deserve its own genus, for which he coined the name Indopacetus, to reflect the fact that the species was now known to occur in the Indian Ocean as well as in the Pacific.
My colleagues and I made a quick review of our options and found only two possibilities: the tropical cetacean had to be either a new species or the enigmatic whale Longman had described seventy-five years earlier.
All we knew for certain was that this was a fairly large beaked whale, that it was found in the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans, and that it was probably a rare species.

CETACEA: Mesoplodon pacificus (Longman's Beaked Whale)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In 1926 - some forty-four years after the first skull was found - he gave it the name pacificus, in order to distinguish it from the latter, which was only known by three specimens at the time.
However, Alan N. Baker from New Zealand's National Museum has suggested that one of the skulls is too large for a Mesoplodon, and, like other scientists, believes that Longman's Beaked Whale should be in a genus of its own, Indopacetus.
The debate - and the mystery of this cetacean - continues.

Recently, Dr Merel Dalebout was able to obtain DNA from the holotype (first named specimen) of Indopacetus pacificus : the original beachwashed skull from Mackay, Queensland.
This was a great achievement considering both the age of the specimen (over 120 years since its discovery) and the fact that it was much weathered by the sun and sea.
