Indore is the commercial capital of the Malwa region and the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh (MP).
Indore is the administrative headquarters of Indore District and Indore Division, and formerly served as the capital of the former princely state of Indore and the summer capital of the erstwhile state of Madhya Bharat.
Indore was formerly ruled by Maratha Maharajas of the Holkar dynasty.

In 1998 and 1999, seven new districts were created: Barwani district was split from West Nimar, Dindori district was split from Mandla, Harda district was split from Hoshangabad, Katni district was split from Jabalpur, Neemuch district was split from Mandsaur, Sheopur district was split from Morena, and Umaria district was split from Shahdol.
Another nine districts were created in the eastern portion of the state, which became the new state of Chhattisgarh on November 1, 2000.
On August 15, 2003, three new districts were created; Anuppur district was split from Shahdol, Ashoknagar district was split from Guna, and Burhanpur district was split from Khandwa (East Nimar).

So far, 148.00 mm rainfall was recorded in the district against the last year's figure of 219.2 mm prompting the administration to declare Indore as 'water-scarce' district, official sources said here today.
Similarly, digging of borewells is also banned in the district without the prior permission of the collector and other concerned authorities, the sources said.
