Topic: Indravarman III

In the News (Fri 1 Jan 10)

Angkor Wat Period Before 1000 A.D.
How Indravarman I ascended the throne still remains in mystery as he did not seem to have any connection with the two former kings.
Indravarman I was a strong man, expanding his territory vigorously throughout Cambodia and moving his capital from Harilaraya to Roluos, about thirteen kilometers east of the present Siemreap town.
Indravarman I built at least two primitive Khmer temples, namely the Preah Ko temple, devoted for his royal ancestral spirits, and the Bakong, a mountain temple dedicated for the Hindu gods.

Thirty years after Jayavarman II’s death, King Indravarman III constructed the temple of Preah Ko, the first major member of the ‘Roluos Group’, in honor of Jayavarman II.
Indravarman III also built the first large baray (water reservoir), thereby establishing two more defining marks of the Angkorian kingship - in addition to the linga-cult, the construction of temple monuments and grand water projects became part of kingly tradition.
Indravarman III’s son, Yasovarman I, carried on the tradition of his father, building the East Baray as well as the last major temple of the Roluos Group (Lolei), and the first major temple in the Angkor area (Phnom Bakheng).

Or, again, since each century of the Kollam reckoning begins in the same year A.D. with a century of the Saptarshi reckoning (see below under III.
Other Reckonings), it is not impossible that this reckoning may be a southern offshoot of the Saptarshi reckoning, or at least may have had the same astrological origin.

Vagamundos v4: Asia - Angkor. The Khmer Empire
The first monarch of the era was Jayavarman II, who in 802 AD situated the capital in Roluo, 15 km south of Siem Rep.
His successor, Indravarman III ordered the construction of the water deposits that abound in the region, and his son Yasavarman I shifted the capital to Angkor, which —with the exception of 20 years- remained the capital for half a millennium.
In 1431, the continuous invasions of the Thais and the fact that Angkor was not situated close to a major river caused the transfer of the capital to Phnom Penh which, due to its location on Mekong River, was much more suitable for trade.
