Members of the other lemur family (Indriidae) are sometimes called silky lemurs.
Lemurs are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Primates, families Lemuridae and Indriidae.

A basic scheme that has been widely followed is Simpson's (1945) division of the Primates into two suborders: Prosimii, for the families Tupaiidae, Lemuridae, Indriidae, Daubentoniidae, Lorisidae, and Tarsiidae; and Anthropoidea, for the families Cebidae, Callitrichidae, Cercopithecidae, Pongidae, and Hominidae.
The living Strepsirhini are sometimes divided into two infraorders: the Lemuriformes, for the Lemuridae, Indriidae, and Daubentoniidae; and the Lorisiformes, for the Lorisidae.
An extensive review of dentition led Schwartz and Tattersall (1985) to suggest that the Megaladapidae, as well as the Indriidae and Lemuridae, are associated phylogenetically with the fossil family Adapidae of the European Eocene, and that the Cheirogaleidae and Lorisidae are associated with certain Eocene non-adapid strepsirhine primates.

Its numbers are steadily dwindling due to habitat destruction (deforestation) by humans.
The indri is a member of the family Indriidae, which also contains three other living species; the avahi, or woolly indri, Avahi, and two species of sifakas, Propithecus, all native to Madagascar.
The indri stands about 70 cm (2.5 ft) tall and has a narrow, nearly hairless muzzle, very long hind legs, and a stumpy, 5-cm (2-in) tail.

 Thesis abstract
The Lemuriforms used in the survey understand representatives of most kinds of Lemuridae (Eulemur, Hapalemur, and Varecia), of Indriidae (Indri, Propithecus, Avahi), of Lepilemuridae, of Cheirogaleidae (Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Mirza),and of Daubentoniidae.
To the basis of the cluster of the Lemuriformes the Cheirogaleidae are found.
The appraised values of the shape parameter (alpha) of the gamma distribution vary from 0.091595 for the Lepilemuridae to 0.504956 for the Indriidae.

 Primates as an Adaptive Array
Indriidae are unique among lemuroids in terms of diet and locomotion.
The are somewhat folivorous and have an enlarged digestive tract to process plant materials, usually leaves, shoots, fruits, flowers and bark.
The family Indriidae includes three genera, Indri (indris), Avahi (wooly lemur), and Propithecus (sifaka) with intermembral indexes of 63, 57, and 58 respectively.

Molecular biology and Lemuriformes (Malagasy Primates) phylogeny In this study most of the species included in the Lemuridae (Eulemur, Hapalemur, Varecia), Indriidae (Indri, Propithecus, Avahi), Lepilemuridae, Cheirogaleidae (Cheirogaleus, Microcebus, Mirza) and Daubentonia are used, as well as a sub-fossile (Megaladapis edwardsi) and two Tupaia species.
The most 'credible' phylogenetic reconstruction is then: ((Cheirogaleidae, (Indriidae, (Lepilemuridae, Megaladapis)), ((Eulemur, Hapalemur), Varecia)), (Daubentonia, Tupaia)) The association between Daubentonia and Tupaia may indicate the existence of two distinct Lemuriformes colonisations, one conducting to the Daubentonia and the other to all other Malagasy Strepsirhini.
The Megaladapis edwardsi sub-fossile appear to be grouped with le Lepilemuridae and together formed a clade how is the sister clade of the one including Indriidae.

The name of this family is usually spelled Indriidae; here, we follow Wilson and Reeder (1991) and sources cited therein in the spelling Indridae, and in using using the generic name Avahi rather than Lichanotus.
Despite relatively few species, the Indridae are a diverse lot, ranging in body length from only about 300 mm in body length (excluding the tail) to almost a meter, and from around 1 kg weight to 10 kg (the largest strepsirhine).

An annotated catalogue of Malagasy primates (families Lemuridae, Indriidae, Daubentoniidae, Megaladapidae, Cheirogaleidae) in the collections of the American Museum of Natural History.
The Department of Mammalogy of the American Museum of Natural History has one of the largest and best documented collections of preserved specimens representing the living primate species of Madagascar (families Lemuridae, Indriidae, Daubentoniidae, Megaladapidae, and Cheirogaleidae).
For each specimen, the following information is given: taxon, catalogue number, date collected or catalogued (accessioned), sex (where known), age, nature of specimen, locality, and collector or source.

Molar morphology and variation in two Malagasy lemur families (Lemuridae and Indriidae)
Dentally, all lemurs possess the characteristic strepsirhine anterior tooth comb, but exhibit variation in their postcanine teeth that may be related to dietary differences.
In this study, I examine two factors that could complicate a strictly functional interpretation of tooth form variation in two families of Malagasy primates, the Lemuridae and Indriidae.
