Rendering (industrial) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the absence of the rendering industry, the cost of waste disposal of waste animal material would be very high and would place a significant economic and environmental burden on areas involved in industrial scale slaughtering.
Other major factors which impacted the industry in the 20th century were the popularization of chemical fertilizers, the development of synthetic detergents, the widespread adoption of "boxed beef" in the USA, and the change in consumer eating habits to reject animal fats.
The rendering industry is one of the oldest recycling industries, and made possible the development of a large food industry.

Render Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Rendering adds nearly one billion dollars in value to the livestock production sector in the form of protein materials and also removes the need to dispose of by-products in landfills or by other methods that might pose potential health risks or strain existing landfill space.
Rendered animal proteins are especially valuable to the livestock and feed industry because of their high protein content, digestible amino acid levels (especially lysine), mineral availability (especially calcium and phosphorous), and relatively low cost in relation to their nutrient value.
Although the rendering industry will be the initial recipient of cost shocks resulting from future regulation of livestock feeding practices, these impacts will quickly be distributed across the marketing chain for livestock and derived products – affecting cattle producers, meat packers, meat processors, renderers, and even consumers in the form of higher meat prices.

Rendering, which dates to the early Egyptians, operates in the shadows of polite society, persisting because it provides an essential service: disposing of millions of pounds of dead animals every day.
But British rendering practices may have helped spread the disease, said David Evans, president of Carolina Byproducts, a rendering company in Greensboro, N.C. There are people in Britain, called knackers, who make a living going around the countryside picking up dead animals and rendering them in their backyards.
In 1989, the American rendering industry initiated a voluntary program under which, for example, no sheep heads were to be accepted at rendering plants.

 Image-Based Rendering for Industrial Applications
Our image-based rendering technique is iterative because it iteratively corrects the BRDF of the 3D surfaces, and it is hierarchical because it proceeds with more and more complex assumptions about the photometry of the objects inside the scene.
If a particular reflectance property has been tried for a surface, and if it produces an image that still has important errors on all the surface area, this reflectance is automatically forced to be a more complex one (perfect specular or isotropic for example).
As a conclusion, we have presented a new image-based rendering technique that is very fast and that recovers the BRDF (for diffuse, specular, isotropic, anisotropic and textured objects) of all surfaces inside a scene, including very complex ones.
