All the same, every chance I get, I direct incoming undergraduates and their parents to horribly inefficient courses, such as seminars and studios, in which knowledge is treated as a process rather than as a product.
To make that case effectively, faculty members at all institutions, and in all disciplines, need to stress to administrators and policy makers the importance of undergraduate instruction and advising, small class sizes, reasonable teaching loads, student writing, and, for advanced undergraduates, perhaps even practicum seminars or collaboration with professors.
Administrators will reply that inefficiency is expensive, and that every undergraduate class can't be run like a seminar with an enrollment of 14.

Dieting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If the liver was engaged in gluconeogenesis from fat, and synthesizing fat from glucose at the same time, this would be a futile cycle, and a fantastic way to waste energy and lose weight.
For most of human history, it has been important to survival to avoid such inefficiency, so the body switches modes to avoid this futile cycle.
This explains the dramatic reductions in fasting TGs seen in many low carbohydrate dieters.

Results indicated that U.S. state inefficiency levels were significantly and positively correlated with the ratio of public capital to private capital.
The proportion of public capital devoted to highways is negatively correlated with technical inefficiency, suggesting that not only the level but also the composition of public capital influenced state efficiency.

Robert Nozick [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Many libertarians appeal, in defending their position, to economic and sociological considerations - the benefits of market competition, the inherent mechanisms inclining state bureaucracies toward incompetence and inefficiency, the poor record of governmental attempts to deal with specific problems like poverty and pollution, and so forth.
Nozick endorses such arguments, but his main defense of libertarianism is a moral one, his view being that whatever its practical benefits, the strongest reason to advocate a libertarian society is simply that such advocacy follows from a serious respect for individual rights.
The various programs of the modern liberal welfare state are thus immoral, not only because they are inefficient and incompetently administered, but because they make slaves of the citizens of such a state.
