Why I Believe in the Inerrancy of the Scriptures
Our reasoning faculties must be sufficiently competent to consider the evidence of inspiration and inerrancy, applying the law of contradiction and other self-evident rules of logic in order to ascertain whether the Bible is consistent with a supernatural origin.
Consequently, the doctrine of inerrancy applies to the biblical text in our day as well--insofar as the Bible has been accurately translated.
Inerrancy extends to statements of fact, whether scientific, historical, or geographical.

Biblical inerrancy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In its most stringent form, Biblical inerrancy holds that the Bible is literally true in every word, at least in the original autograph (the first texts written in the original Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic).
Biblical inerrancy is the belief that the Bible is without error.
The theological basis of the belief, in its simplest form, is that as God is infallible, the Bible, as the word of God, must also be free from error.

 Traditional Biblical Inerrancy
As I will be showing in upcoming articles on the new fundamentalists, this position is as impossible to defend as the traditional view of biblical inerrancy, but at least the traditionalists have a semblance of logic on their side.
In the case of the biblical god Yahweh, the Bible claims that truth and honesty are features of his nature.
Hence, the traditional fundamentalists are the ones who are preaching what the Bible actually teaches on this subject, and the new fundamentalists teach a view that is both illogical and contrary to what the Bible plainly says about how "the word of God" was channeled through "inspired" men.

 Modernism and Biblical Inerrancy
Before we examine the many biblical passages and doctrines that clearly teach that the Bible is God& inspired, infallible Word, it should be noted that Christianity stands or falls upon biblical inerrancy.

Encyclopedia article on Biblical inerrancy [EncycloZine]
Postmodern Christians would argue that the doctrine of inerrancy is easily subjected to certain abuses, such as the idea that the translations of the Bible or the surviving ancient texts are inerrant.
This view was ably expressed in 1978 in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, an interdenominational statement of evangelical scholars and leaders to defend Biblical inerrancy against the trend toward liberal and neo-orthodox conceptions of Scripture.
It could be argued that Postmodern Christianity is compatible with Biblical inerrancy, when the latter is understood as referring to the complete accuracy of the author's intent in the autographs, and allow for meanings not necessarily intended by the author but not incompatible with authorial intent.

Just as biblical authority only became part of Protestant confessions in the sixteenth century to counter the idea that tradition is the supreme authority of he church, so the doctrine of biblical inerrancy was only explicitly formulated to counter explicit denials of the Bible's truthfulness.
The basis for the doctrine of biblical inerrancy is located both in the nature of God and in the Bible's teaching about itself.
This is as true of inerrancy as it is of the doctrines of the Trinity, or of justification by faith.

 The Error of Biblical Inerrancy
Biblical inerrancy means that since the human authors and editors of the Bible were led or influenced by God, it follows that the Bible is "the Word of God." It also implies that the writings have been thereby supernaturally protected from error, and that therefore scripture is entirely trustworthy and authoritative.
Not everyone, however, accepted inerrancy — as we found out in the case of the Roman Catholic Church.
Today all but the most extreme Jewish and Christian groups recognize the complicated and varied origins of the Bible, and that it contains statements that in any other literary work would be considered erroneous.

The Inspiration, Inerrancy & Authority of the Holy Scriptures
All of our other distinctive beliefs and practices grow and flow out of this distinctive belief, including our belief in the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible itself.
Inerrancy means that the Bible is entirely true and trustworthy and wholly without error in all that it affirms, whether those affirmations concern doctrinal, practical, moral, historical, geographical, or scientifical matters.
Nowhere is any hint to be found of the compatibility of inspiration with error or that some parts of Scripture are to be segregated from others as more, or less, trustworthy." Inspiration includes the whole and every part of God’s Word.

 The Modern Inerrancy Debate
The modern concept of inerrancy, and it is a modern concept, arises out of Calvinistic based fundamentalism as it blended a basic position in predeterminism (predestination) with a narrow rationalism to defend Scripture (the "Battle for the Bible") against the excesses of scientific positivism and naturalism.
As a result, the Bible is often made to serve the doctrine of inerrancy, a move which runs counter to one of the primary tenants of the Reformation, that Scripture should be the primary authority for the faith and practice of the Christina community, not doctrines.
In other words, if the criteria of inerrancy is to be the judge of truth, it solves nothing to push the inerrancy into the distant past since we only have the text today as it is. If that criteria is valid, then we do not have the truth.

Inerrancy’s relationship to authority is closely related to the question of how the Bible views itself.
The Battle for the Bible by Harold Lindsell and the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy (ICBI) in October 1978, which produced the “Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy.” Both of these events were in response to what many evangelicals feared was a weakening of the authority of Scripture.
Geisler considers various definitions of truth in his article, “The Concept of Truth in the Inerrancy Debate.” He distinguishes between a “correspondence” view of truth, which he advocates and the “intentionality” view of truth, which he considers an unbiblical definition employed by opponents of inerrancy.

Inerrantists believe that these statements in combination yield a doctrine of the Bible which has been labelled "inerrancy." (See Rich's posting for a good explanation of the doctrine.) The doctrine of inerrancy is as much a part of the revelation contained in the Bible as is the deity of Christ or the reality of forgiveness.
Subject: Inerrancy statement II Approved: christian@aramis.rutgers.edu To further clarify what evangelicals mean by inerrancy and to ward off some of the common misconceptions about inerrancy, I am posting an excellent statement on inerrancy called "The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy."  How the ICBI Started
Another ICBI book, The Foundation for Biblical Authority, edited by James Boice and also published by Zondervan, answered the Roger's book and is an excellent survey for the pastor and academic layperson to come to a solid understanding of the debate and the historical arguments of the church for the Bible's inerrancy.
At that conference we would also work through and release a set of affirmations and denials on the inerrancy of Scripture and claim that there is no real biblical authority without biblical inerrancy and that the church was bound to deteriorate to the degree it rejected the inerrancy of the Bible.
Biblical inerrancy is one of the theological issues that is being dealt with by the International Church Council, which is in many respects the spiritual successor to the now defunct ICBI.

Deep calls to Deep - A New Kind of Christian - Blog: Inerrancy
Inerrancy doesn't concern itself with such figures of speech--unless you want to define "inerrancy" in a way that inerrantists DON'T. The fundamental issue in the inerrancy argument goes to the question, "what is the Bible?" Is the Bible God's Word TO us, or is it man's word ABOUT God?
That believers until the 20th century had little to say about inerrancy in no way suggests that they didn't believe it; rather, I'd suggest that no one had the temerity, until the 20th century, to call himself a "Christian" and doubt it!
My point about the mustard seed is to say that Jesus speaking in that way made no "error" at all; rather, he was using a figure of speech that would be understood by His hearers.

By sweeping this issue aside, Dr. Staples takes the position of limited inerrancy - that the Bible is without error when it deals with salvation, but should not be expected to be inerrant with regard to other subjects.

Alleged inconsistencies in the Bible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Advocates of Biblical inerrancy hold that they are not, in fact inconsistencies and that the claims of Bible inconsistencies are often the result of insufficient exegesis since Bible scholarship is multidisciplinary endeavor (language, cultural differences, historiography, etc).
Moreover, Bible inerrantists and conservative Christian scholars see copyists errors as not affecting the legitimacy of the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy and a unreasonable complaint of skeptics who raise this objection.
Bible inerrantists and conservative Christians scholars, however, often complain that when skeptics raise such objections they fail to take into account (or fail to mention) the issue of copyists' errors or the issue of estimations (which is a cultural difference) or other important matters when they make such exegetical commentary.

Inerrancy and Infallibility of the Bible
Inerrancy regarding the Bible is rather different than what a lot of people think it is! Skeptics can easily show many differences in wording between different (English translations of) Bibles.
Therefore, they claim that Inerrancy is not true of the Bible.
Inerrancy is the view that when all the facts become known, they will demonstrate that the Bible in its original autographs and correctly interpreted is entirely true and never false in all it affirms, whether that relates to doctrine or ethics or to the social, physical, or life sciences.

The inerrancy of the Bible follows as a consequence of this Divine authorship.
The Bible is plainly a literature, that is, an important collection of writings which were not composed at once and did not proceed from one hand, but rather were spread over a considerable period of time and are traceable to different authors of varying literary excellence.
As a literature, too, the Bible bears throughout the distinct impress of the circumstances of place and time, methods of composition, etc., in which its various parts came into existence, and of these circumstances careful account must be taken, in the interests of accurate scriptural interpretation.
