Infancy Gospel of Thomas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Infancy Gospel of Thomas is, like many such texts, a pseudepigraphical work, for it claims within itself to have been written by "Thomas the Israelite" (in a medieval Latin version).
Later references by Hippolytus and Origen to a Gospel of Thomas are more likely to be referring to this Infancy Gospel than to the wholly different Gospel of Thomas with which it is sometimes confused.
An historical Thomas (or Judas Thomas, Didymos Judas Thomas, etc.) is very unlikely to have had anything to do with the text: whoever its initial author was, he seems not to have known anything of Jewish life except for the Passover observance, and certainly had a completed Gospel of Luke to refer to.

Gospel of Thomas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gospel of Thomas is distinct and unrelated to other apocryphal or pseudepigraphal works, the Acts of Thomas, and the work called the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, which expands on the canonical texts to describe the miraculous childhood of Jesus.
The gospel is ostensibly written from the point of view of Didymus Judas Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus (who appears in the Gospel of John as "doubting Thomas").
In Saying 114 of the Gospel of Thomas, Peter, who represents the orthodox viewpoint, asks Jesus to tell Mary Magdalene to leave, as women in general are unworthy of spiritual teachings.

BOOKS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT: THE GOSPELS
The Gospel of Thomas is one of about 40 gospels that were widely accepted among early Christians, but which never made it into the Christian Scriptures (New Testament).
Gospel is a translation of the Greek word "euangelion" which means "good news." About 50 gospels were written in the first and second century CE; each was believed to be accurate by various groups within the early Christian movement.
Since they regard all of the gospels as inerrant (free of error) and inspired by God, it matters little who wrote them, when they were written, and which author had access to which documents.

 The Thomas Books
The origins of the Infancy Gospel, found in many versions in several languages, are obscure and it is not known when the name of Thomas became attached to it.
The Gospel of Thomas is evidence for an early tradition, equally as old as (perhaps even older than) those found in the long-accepted Christian canon but differing significantly from them.
For example, the very fact that the Gospel was in the form of Sayings standing alone, a form that was being replaced by narratives (under the names of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John) later in the first century, indicates a very early date of composition.

 KAIMOI
The frequent mentions of Jesus’ mother Mary and the notes that “she kept to herself what she had seen him do” suggests that she was the source Thomas relied on for much of his material in The Infancy Gospel.
But Thomas shows Jesus as a child who is not yet in command of himself and his powers and seems to act “childish.” This shows an awareness of human development well beyond the narrative abilities of ancient writers of fiction; to posit such is to posit the unique and unexampled.
All of the gospels agree that Jesus was capable of working miracles, and if Jesus was the incarnation of God, as the Christian faith claims, then he had the power to do these things.

* The Infancy Gospel of Thomas is a classic "lost book" of the Bible which depicts a preadolescent Jesus in what can be called an unflattering light, with the young Son of Man using His divine powers in what appear to be capricious and, at times, homicidal ways.
According to noted religious scholar Bart D. Ehrman (whose work provides the basis for this quiz), few scholars take the "Infancy Gospel of Thomas" very seriously as a biography of Jesus, believing it to be a largely speculative work composed around 125 CE.

150 C.E. The Infancy Gospel of Thomas was probably the first of many attempts by the early Christians to document the first twelve years of Jesus's life, bridging the gap left in the second chapter of Luke.
The original language of the text is unknown—Greek or Syriac are probable—but the story was popular enough to survive in numerous translations, redactions, and parallel stories, including several Egyptian infancy gospels, as late as the Protestant Reformation.
The gospel's portrayal of Jesus, though perhaps alarming to more orthodox sensibilities, would have been quite familiar to early Gentiles, as the young Christ displays all the precociousness, cleverness, and even destructiveness of the child-gods in pagan mythology.

Since the New Testament gospels form the basis for the majority of later metamorphoses of Jesus, we’ll first examine how these texts, along with their non-canonical rivals, are a product of the complex relationship between early Christianity (which began as a factious Judeo-apocalyptic sect) and the powerful ideological and cultural forces of the Greco-Roman world.
