  SoldierTech: Infantry 1, Tank 0
Since infantry were incapable of carrying effective AT guns by themselves, there was a need for a weapon light enough to be man-portable, yet powerful enough to destroy a tank.
Where the armor penetrating capabilities of a kinetic energy round fell off over distance (as the projectile bled off energy), the HEAT rounds were just as effective at their maximum range as they were at point blank range.
This was not a risk that armor could mitigate; out-ranged and outgunned (you could not hang enough steel on a tank to prevent SC burn-through), the introduction of the ATGM all but signaled the extinction of the tank.

USS Clueless - The end of the tank?
Life began to be perilous for armored knights when archers began to use armor-piercing arrows, but even as late as the 30 Years War, knights were still the dominant force on the battlefield.
By the time of the Napoleonic wars, armor on heavy cavalry had been reduced to the cuirass, a metal shell around the upper trunk of the cavalryman intended primarily to defend him against the lance and bayonet.
The basic idea was to use combined air/artillery/infantry assault to break a hole in the enemy line and then throw concentrated formations of armor through the hole to move into the enemy's rear and exploit the breakthrough.

Since they use cannons, they are dangerously weak against infantry; a grenadier one on one with a gun turret is somewhat even, which is rather weak for a defensive installation.
Armored units, because they are low to the ground, airtight, made of metal, and very heavily protected, are much less vulnerable to radiation/heat effects.
Their bite is great against infantry, and they can squish all the soft targets (including walls and sandbags), but they aren't that good against heavy tank armor.

Infantry is hit on 5o% of the die side(more if they are cut off) and armor can sit back and soften them up with three dice at range before moving in, making the breakthrough more likely, which means a follow up attack on another unit,or them (approved by the run-on sentance committee).
Well-trained and tenacious infantry was (and is still) capable of taking on enemy armor formations, as long as the infantrymen used tactics and terrain to their advantage.
Infantry were very much capable of taking on tanks without support, as the Battle for Arnhem and Pegasus Bridge both demonstrate admirably.

Notes on the Mobile Infantry and Power Armor of OGRE and GEV
Armor was generally very rigorously tested by its manufacturers, indeed, the 'proof' of the defensive capacity of some later designs of plate armor was a large dent found in all new plate armor suits.
Armored infantry carriers appeared with the first APCs and IFVs, allowing many individual infantrymen to move and fight, but they suffered the same disadvantages as a tank did; big, slow, and too costly to fall to a cheap one shot anti-tank style weapon.
Armored screened intakes over the back of the suit sucked in ambient air, and used part of the plasma heat exchanger to super heat this air into overthrust usable by the battledress though dumping the superheated air into the mixture generated a massive thermal spike readily visible on tactical target acquisition sensors.

If the attacker loses more than two infantry units in the assault and in fighting off the counterattack, then he'd better hang onto the Caucasus for more than one turn, or the exchange is a net loss in terms of IPCs.
To reliably win the battle and have enough surviving infantry to protect the armor against counterattack requires an assault force of at least 10 infantry and four or five tanks -- a minimum of 55 IPCs in the attack, almost two-to-one against the defenders.

You would think that not only that single infantry is prone to being destroyed (and therefore a sure score for your opponent), it should also be "weaker" when attacking.
Yes yes I understand that Mik, but I can't help but feel that it is unfair/unreasonable that the "attack value" or "firepower" of one infantry in a unit (representing one soldier or a hundred) is EXACTLY THE SAME as a 4 infantry or armror unit (ok ok, 4 soldiers or 400).
Plus the attacker will be more willing to protect this single infantry unit, not only because it will be easier to kill and will give the defender a score, but because it is a weaker unit when attacking.

The extra weight of this additional armor is not a problem for the troops manning weapons, or driving the vehicles.
The only problem with the new armor, aside from up to eight pounds of additional weight (depending on how many of the small plates are used), is that it cannot be manufactured quickly enough to replace the hundreds of thousands of older type vests already in use.
