Human wave attack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Human wave attack is a military term describing a type of assault performed by infantry units, in which soldiers attack in successive line formations, often in dense groups, generally without the support of other arms or with any sophistication in the tactics used.
What we today call 'human-wave' tactics were in fact the main tactic used by infantry in the attack prior to the development of skirmisher tactics during the Napoleonic Wars.
The infantry attack may be more successful when combined with other supporting arms such as tank support, infiltration tactics, night attacks, flanking attacks, and so forth.

The objective of the infantry is to penetrate into the enemy position and destroy enemy antitank weapons to the limit of its strength and the fire power of its own support weapons, augmented by additional support and covering fire from the tanks and self-propelled weapons sited in their rear.
The infantry attack is conducted in the same manner as it would be without the cooperation of tanks.
Attacks most often are made at dawn, and are preceded normally by heavy artillery preparation, one purpose of which is to make shell holes which afford cover for the advancing assault detachments as they move forward.

Tanks operating with infantry during offensive operations assisted the infantry by destroying the enemy with firepower and by keeping the attack moving using the tanks' inherent armored protection and mobility.

TOAW Strategy guide: Hints, tips, and tricks
In TOAW terms, if you can successfully fake an attack that draws large quantities of reserves to one end of the board, and then launch a decisive attack at the other end, you have dislocated a large body of enemy troops; this is great fun when it works.
Even in a case where the 2 infantry regiments attacked 2 armored brigades, the odds ratio would be 2:3 for the tanks attack vs. the infantry, where the infantry attacks against the tank are at 2:1.
When it is attacked, your powerful tactical reserves enter combat, potentially surprising the opponent, causing excess casualties in the attack, and taking a lot of the opponent’s time for the turn.

Battlefront.com Discussion Forums: Infantry Attacks across open ground.
Infantry goes first because it is expendable, relatively robust when rally is taken into account, and creates a threat that tends to make defenders fire, because its power grows as it closes.
If the infantry just charges, trying to cross the gap as rapidly as possible, pushed as hard as possible, its morale is so low it will be scattered to the winds.
Infantry units advancing across open ground against such weapons is often virtually suidal.
