Inferior colliculus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The inferior colliculus lies caudal to its counterpart - the superior colliculus - above the trochlear nerve, and at the base of the projection of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGN) and the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN).
The inferior colliculus is the principal midbrain nucleus of the auditory pathway and receives input from several more peripheral brainstem nuclei in the auditory pathway, as well as inputs from the auditory cortex.
The inferior colliculus is the first place where vertically orienting data from the fusiform cells in the dorsal cochlear nucleus can finally synapse with horizontally orienting data.

Above the central canal, the tectum is composed of inferior and superior colliculi; below are the paired cerebral peduncles composed of the tegmentum (continuous with the tegmentum of the pons), substantia nigra, and crus cerebri.
At the level of the inferior colliculus, lying ventrally in the central gray, is the trochlear nucleus.
Associated with the superior colliculus level is the oculomotor nerve, serving the a) inferior oblique, medial, superior, and inferior rectus muscles and b) the parasympathetic fibers to the iris and ciliary muscles.

Bilateral projections to the inferior colliculus originate within the dorsal column nuclei, the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis pars ventralis, the lateral and medial superior olivary nuclei, the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and the auditory cortex.
Anterograde axonal degeneration and transport techniques revealed that the inferior colliculus is innervated differentially by the dorsal and ventral cochlear nucleus, the superior olivary complex and the auditory neocortex.

The caudal two bumps are the inferior colliculi and together they (inferior and superior colliculi) comprise the TECTUM or roof of the midbrain.
In contrast to the inferior colliculus, which is an AUDITORY structure, the superior colliculus is usually described as a VISUAL reflex center.
This reflex would involve a projection from the retinae to the superficial layers of the RIGHT superior colliculus (retinocollicular), a short pathway from cells in the superficial layers to cells in the intermediate and deep layers and then the long CROSSED tectospinal axons to the LEFT side of the cervical spinal cord.

It comprises the rostral aspect of the midbrain, posterior to the periaqueductal gray and adjacent superior the inferior colliculus.
In humans, the superior colliculus (SC) is involved in the generation of saccadic eye movements and eye-head coordination.
Afferents to the SC originate in the cerebral cortex, inferior colliculus, retina, basal ganglia, and spinal cord.

The Superior Colliculus   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The superior colliculus in the mammalian mid-brain is responsible for the control of goal directed orientation responses towards novel sensory stimuli.
On anatomical grounds the SC is divisible in to seven alternating cell and fibre layers from dorsal to ventral.
The deep layers of the mammalian superior colliculus (DSC) are responsible for the generation of appropriate orientation responses of the eyes, head, pinnae and whiskers towards novel sensory stimuli.

Is there a morphine store in the brain of the camel?
We had observed that, unlike in most mammals, the superior colliculus of the camel is much larger than the inferior colliculus, another similar nervous centre lying alongside it.
It is known that the superior colliculus is concerned with visual reflexes and head, neck and eye movements, of obvious importance to this animal with large eyes, head and neck, and apparent good vision.
The superior colliculus is composed of layers of alternating grey matter (largely composed of neuronal cell bodies) and white matter (containing mainly nerve fibres) (Figure 6).

As in the measurements of blood flow, baseline uptake of deoxyglucose is highest in the inferior colliculus.
Processing of acoustic stimuli in the inferior colliculus plays a key role in representation of space, and this involves moment to moment damping of some signals to enhance focus on sounds of greater importance.
Variability in which of the brainstem nuclei of high metabolic rate are damaged is likely due to a variety of protective biofeedback mechanisms, and the most active inferior colliculus may have priority over areas with lesser metabolic demands.

We examine the nature of the information that ascends in the brain stem pathways and how this information is integrated at the inferior colliculus of echolocating bats.
Because much of the input to the inferior colliculus is inhibitory, a major goal of this research is to investigate the role of inhibitory mechanisms in shaping neural responses to sound, specifically, to the temporal and spectral features of sound.
