Infernal Affairs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Infernal Affairs (無間道) is a stylish 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller about an cop (Tony Leung, as Yan, 陳永仁) going deep undercover into the Triads and a Triad member going into the police department (Andy Lau, as Ming, 劉健明).
Infernal Affairs was known for its star-studded cast of Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Anthony Wong (黄秋生), Eric Tsang (曾志伟), Kelly Chen, and Sammi Cheng.
Due to this commercial and critical success, the original Infernal Affairs was followed by a prequel Infernal Affairs II and a sequel Infernal Affairs III in 2003.

 Infernal Affairs 3 (2003)
After the solid blockbuster Infernal Affairs, and the tense, meaty prequel Infernal Affairs II, all the principals of the first flicks regroup for Infernal Affairs III, a final blowout epic which promises to decide once and for all the fate of sneaky undercover triad guy Lau Kin-Ming (Andy Lau).
Infernal Affairs III is not tightly crafted like the first film, nor meaty and dramatic like the second.
Infernal Affairs III will not be remembered for amazing filmmaking, but those seeking Hong Kong Cinema—and the big stars, iconic drama, and compelling twists it promises—should be okay.

 Infernal Affairs III
So goes one of the repeated refrains within Infernal Affairs, thereby establishing the key point of distinction between its doubled protagonists Chen Wing Yan, the cop undercover amidst the triads, who comes to accept this, and Lau Kin Ming, the triad mole amidst the cops, who does not.
What it does seem to suffer from, however, is a touch of sequelitis, not quite fitting in with its predecessors – particularly Yan's acceptance of his fate as compared to his characterisation in the first film – nor attaining their admittedly heady heights.
Still, the filmmakers are to be congratulated on their achievements and vision within the Infernal Affairs trilogy as a whole, all the more so considering the difficulties that have faced the Hong Kong industry in recent years.

Firecracker | Infernal Affairs III   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Perhaps partly due to the disappointing showing of the superb Infernal Affairs II at the UK box office (which took in something like a tenth of the first installment), the closing chapter of the epic Hong Kong crime trilogy bypasses the theatres and makes its debut on DVD.
Infernal Affairs was a watershed moment in recent Hong Kong movie history, so much so that it has become the default point of comparison for any crime thriller from the region, even extending to those actually made beforehand (Firecracker too has been guilty of referring to earlier movies as "proto-Infernal Affairs").
Against the odds, the sequel (or rather prequel) was a triumph, a gripping thriller which added new layers of complexity to the saga and validated the claims of a Godfather-style epic in the making, and this despite the absence of the first movie’s two star draws: Andy Lau and Tony Leung.

The final conclusion to this powerhouse trilogy lies within the past, where Sam, Yan, and SP Wong are still in the unraveling game of infernal affairs.
With ‘The Matrix’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ wrapping up their stories, I consider ‘Infernal Affairs III’ to be the most satisfying finale.
There is no doubt about it, the ‘Infernal Affairs’ series has become a landmark achievement in the world of Hong Kong cinema.

Following in the footsteps of films like "Running Out of Time", "Affairs" was a breath of fresh air despite its gritty, grungy, and doomed atmosphere.
In many ways, Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's continuation of the series, 2003's "Infernal Affairs 3" (which comes to us a scant few months after the release of the first sequel, "Infernal Affairs 2"), is better than it has any right to be.
As mentioned, "Infernal Affairs 3" really is better than it has any right to be.

DVD Times - Infernal Affairs III
If the second film in the Infernal Affairs franchise had purposefully borrowed the overall mood and approach of The Godfather, then number three in the series can be seen as the equivalent of The Godfather Part II.
As with Infernal Affairs II it’s a perfectly fine crime thriller, albeit one that can’t live up to the original.
As with the other Infernal Affairs instalments, it’s the DD5.1 mix which is the one to go for, with the stereo offering being largely pointless and the DTS not quite adding enough to justify its inclusion.

In case you have been keeping up, Infernal Affairs III fluctuates between the temporality of I and II (and in case you haven’t been keeping up — tut tut — II was the prequel to I).
III focuses on the stories of Yan (Tony Leung) and Ming (Andy Lau); Yan — a cop working for Mafia boss Sam and Ming — who used to be Sam’s mole on the police force.
Infernal Affairs III utilises the zigzagging time-warp of the trilogy to great effect by creating a huge amount of tension because most of the time we know what’s going to happen, have braced ourselves for it and are then shocked by something else along the way.

Infernal Affairs 3 builds cleverly on the plotline of the first movie, but with its complex story and frequent switches between past and present, is likely to seriously confuse anyone who comes to it without having seen Part 1 first to understand the two main characters.

Infernal Affairs was truly superb and in my Top 5 of the year.
Infernal Affairs II has more of an "epic" feel to it, there are more important issues being delt with, such as the fall of a Trial Dynasty as the leader dies, political struggles and more of the "grand scheme" of things are affected.

Very rarely is the third installment in a trilogy considered the strongest entry, and judging by the initial reaction to Infernal Affairs III, I was fully expecting a Godfather III-style suck-a-thon.
Thankfully, though -- even if it's not as good as the first two films -- Infernal Affairs III is still a solid crime drama, even though it does depend too much on having the viewer seeing the previous movies, the first film in particular.
It's just that overall, Infernal Affairs III feels like a great boxing match that goes on for ten rounds and then ends by a sucker punch -- it's great to watch, but leaves a bit of a sour taste in your mouth after it's over.

Infernal Affairs 2 had proved to be little more than a lazy attempt to 'cash in' on the (deserved) success of the first film by inexplicably substituting the original's too-cool style for some bland direction and stupid story choices, and there seemed little reason to think IA 3 would be any different.
Particularly distressing are those scenes that are intended to give new significance to certain moments in the original, but rather than serve this function, they mostly just highlight exactly how gratuitous any sequel to so perfectly a complete film as Infernal Affairs really is.
Infernal Affairs 3 isn't bad as such, just average; a film that tries too hard to justify its existence and ends up a little confused.

Infernal Affairs III doesn’t live up to its predecessors, but not for want of trying.
Its biggest problem isn’t the intriguing prequel/sequel structure that juxtaposes the aftermath of the first film as Andy Lau tries to be the good man he wants to be, with disastrous consequences, alongside the last months of Tony Leung’s undercover man. Rather, it’s the fact that it takes so long to really find its stride.
Director duo Andrew Lau and Alan Mak bring the iconic "Infernal Affairs" series to an ending which adds up almost every missing piece from the first two installments with a rather deep, psychologically smart script.
