  Infiltration Practices
Infiltration facilities are thought to be potentially the most effective type of BMP for treating polluted stormwater since the soil can be an efficient treatment medium to filter out fecal bacteria, and since soluble heavy metals, phosphorus, and some organic compounds tend to be retained by soil minerals.
Infiltration basins are water impoundments lined with relatively permeable soils and made by excavation or by construction of dams or embankments.
Infiltration basins are designed to temporarily store surface runoff water for a selected design storm or runoff volume, and to increase ground water recharge through infiltration of stored water into the surrounding soil.

AIVC - Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre
The rate of air infiltration is dependent on the porosity of the building shell and the magnitude of the natural driving forces of wind and temperature.
Air infiltration not only adds to the quantity of air entering the building but may also distort the intended air flow pattern to the detriment of overall indoor air quality and comfort.
Infiltration driven by stack effect is particularly high when the difference between inside and outside temperature is at its greatest.

inflow and infiltration of sanitary sewer systems
Inflow and Infiltration water is called "clear water" (although it may be dirty) to distinguish it from normal sanitary sewage water in the sewer system.
If the inflow and infiltration levels were not reduced or eliminated, projecting their contribution to the sanitary sewer systems show that cities and agencies would be required to make significant investments in relief sewer systems and pumping stations.
To quantify the inflow and infiltration into a sanitary sewer system means a significant attempt to locate and record information that relating to a variety of issues including but not limited to observed overflows, measured or observed surcharges, reported bypasses, customer backup complaints, and chronic maintenance activities.

Stormwater | Successful Stormwater Infiltration at Wisconsin's Pabst Farms
Infiltration requires a commitment by the developer to this innovative type of solution because of the higher initial and ongoing costs.
They were designed to infiltrate stormwater from the 100-year storm within three to four days, so as not to drown plantings in the basin.
The first type infiltrated all storms up to and including the 100-year rain; the second type infiltrated only storms in excess of the 10-year storm, with smaller storms draining to an existing onsite pond.

 Detention or Infiltration Basins
Infiltration basins have the added benefits of providing some pollutant removal and reducing the volume of stormwater released from the basin.
Pollutants contained in the infiltrated runoff are absorbed by the soil particles and are considered permanently removed from the water.
For infiltration and dry detention basins, accumulated sediment must be periodically removed to avoid resuspension of the sediment and the resulting release of pollutants back into the discharge from the basin.

Infiltration of files seen as extensive - The Boston Globe
WASHINGTON -- Republican staff members of the US Senate Judiciary Commitee infiltrated opposition computer files for a year, monitoring secret strategy memos and periodically passing on copies to the media, Senate officials told The Globe.
From the spring of 2002 until at least April 2003, members of the GOP committee staff exploited a computer glitch that allowed them to access restricted Democratic communications without a password.
A technician hired by the new judiciary chairman, Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, apparently made a mistake that allowed anyone to access newly created accounts on a Judiciary Committee server shared by both parties -- even though the accounts were supposed to restrict access only to those with the right password.

 Measuring water infiltration rates
Maintaining a constant head in the outer ring was not as critical as maintaining constant head in the inner ring to measuring infiltration rates since the purpose of this head is to reduce the leakage of water between rings; therefore, maintaining the head manually was sufficient.
Cumulative infiltration and time were recorded, with each test generally lasting 40 to 90 minutes for the constant head test and approximately 20 to 30 minutes for the falling head test.
This allows for infiltration tests to be conducted in areas where the methodology suggested by ASTM would not be suitable due to the volume of water required to maintain a constant head in the larger diameter double-ring infiltrometers can not be easily transported to the site.

 Ultra-Urban BMP - FHWA
Infiltration basins are a relatively inflexible BMP primarily because a successful design requires soils with a reasonably high infiltration rate.
Infiltration basins add an aesthetic value to roadside areas as long as they are maintained and litter and debris are regularly removed.
For infiltration basins it is important to avoid the use of herbicides and fertilizers on grassed portions of the strip since these applications can directly contribute undesirable pollutants to waterways.

The Water Cycle: Infiltration, from USGS Water Science Basics
Infiltration of precipitation falling on the ice cap of Greenland might be very small, whereas, as this picture of a stream disappearing into a cave in southern Georgia, USA shows, a stream can act as a direct funnel right into ground water!
Precipitation: The greatest factor controlling infiltration is the amount and characteristics (intensity, duration, etc.) of precipitation that falls as rain or snow.
Precipitation that infiltrates into the ground often seeps into streambeds over an extended period of time, thus a stream will often continue to flow when it hasn't rained for a long time and where there is no direct runoff from recent precipitation.

Stormwater | Constructing an Infiltration Trench Retrofit BMP
Other infiltration BMPs that have a larger and flatter soil-water interface seem to exhibit infiltration rates closer to the soil’s hydraulic conductivity; this is often much lower than a standard “percolation test” would suggest.
Although not directly part of the infiltration trench project and funding, a retaining wall was first constructed to alleviate the erosion of the steep slope adjacent to the future location of the trench.
The infiltration trench is reducing erosive storm flows and nonpoint-source pollution to the headwaters of Mill Creek.

 infiltration
During infiltration events, the water enters the soil in response to potential gradients of water potential and gravitational potential.
The gravity term is a constant for different soils and is due to the impact the pore size, continuity and distribution on the rate of water flow through soil under the influence of gravity This term is known as "A".
The initial water infiltration rate is largely governed by the sorptive forces of the dry soil, this is then replaced once the soil wets up by the gravitational term.

Column 6 indicates the infiltration rate (in mm/minute); this is the infiltration (in mm; column 5) divided by the difference in time (in minutes, column 2).
Column 7 indicates the infiltration rate (in mm/hour); this is the infiltration rate (in mm/minute, column 6) multiplied by 60 (60 minutes in 1 hour).

 Water quality for agriculture
An infiltration problem occurs if the irrigation water does not enter the soil rapidly enough during a normal irrigation cycle to replenish the soil with water needed by the crop before the next irrigation.
The reduced infiltration rate, if due to quality of applied water, is generally a problem within the upper few centimetres of soil but occasionally may occur at greater depths.
Amendments are used to help increase the infiltration or counter the effects of sodium, since, at present, there is no economical process available for removing salts or sodium from irrigation water which is low enough in cost for general agricultural use.

EPA GWERD Software - Infiltration Models
Soil water infiltration is controlled by the rate and duration of water application, soil physical properties, slope, vegetation, and surface roughness.
On the other hand, if water is applied slowly, the infiltration rate may be smaller than the soil infiltrability, and the supply rate becomes a determining factor for the infiltration rate.
However, once the infiltration rate exceeds the soil infiltrability it is the latter which determines the actual infiltration rate, and thus the process becomes profile controlled.

MODRET - infiltration from stormwater retention ponds using MODFLOW - runoff hydrographs
Similar to Version 5.0, the MODRET Version 6.0, For Windows 95, allows generation of runoff hydrographs with various methods, calculation of infiltration losses from a retention pond, discharge (overflow) through various types of weirs and orifices, and generation of graphical results that are suitable for inclusion in final design reports for presentation and permitting.
The Infiltration module of the program uses a modified Green and Ampt infiltration equation to calculate unsaturated infiltration and a modified USGS model "A Modular Three-Dimensional Finite-Difference Ground-Water Flow Model," McDonald and Harbaugh, 1984, to calculate saturated infiltration.
After calculation of infiltration losses, the runoff hydrograph can be routed through infiltration and a new "Runoff-Infiltration" hydrograph can be generated which can then be reused in other surface runoff routing models.

Regional Infiltration/Inflow Control Program -- King County Wastewater Treatment Division
Infiltration is groundwater, or groundwater that is influenced by surface or sea water, that enters sewer pipes (interceptors, collectors, manholes (MH), or side sewers) through holes, breaks, joint failures, connection failures and other openings.
Infiltration quantities often exhibit seasonal variation in response to groundwater levels.
Since infiltration is related to the total amount of piping and appurtenances in the ground and not to any specified water use component, it is usually expressed in terms of the total land area being served, or in terms of the lengths and diameters of sewer pipe.

Infiltration and soil water transport in soils are simulated by a solution of the well known Richards equation, which combines the Darcy equation and the continuity equation:
The main advantage of the model is the capability of recovery in soil infiltration capacity during periods of light or zero rainfall.
Using the Holtan equation, difficulties are not encountered in computing the infiltration rate at any time during a storm event, even when the water supply does not exceed the infiltration rate.

 Infiltration during Infusion Therapy
One consequence of infiltration is that it can lead to necrosis; however, the primary consequence is that the patient is denied necessary fluids or medications.
Rather, the usual causes of infiltration are dislodgment or improper insertion of either a catheter or—in the case of a subcutaneous injection port—a needle.
During routine hospital training, instruct staff members that infusion pumps do not detect infiltration and that patients receiving infusions through these devices should therefore be supervised closely and IV sites should be assessed hourly.
