Infiniti M45 Overview - Edmunds.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The first Infiniti M45 was little more than a Japanese-market Nissan sedan that was rebadged and slightly "Americanized" in order to give Nissan dealers something with which to compete against the high-profile German nameplates that dominate this class.
Options for the M45 line are consistent with its high-tech image, including adaptive cruise control; a lane-departure warning system; a Bose surround-sound DVD audio system with front-seat, shoulder-level surround speakers; heated and reclining rear seats; and a navigation system with voice-activated destination entry.
The original Infiniti M45 debuted in 2003 and was basically a Japanese-market Nissan Cedric luxury sedan brought over to fill the gap between Infiniti's near-luxury G35 and the larger, technology-laden Q45.

Infiniti bailed out of the sports car business until the release of the Infiniti G35 coupe in 2003.
The 2003 M45 was based on the Y34-series Nissan Gloria/Nissan Cedric, with styling similar to the Gloria.
Infiniti released a completely redesigned M for the 2006 model year to compete directly in the mid-size sport luxury class, against such class stalwarts as the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

A performance-oriented rear-wheel-drive sedan, the M45 is positioned between the flagship Q45 -- with which it shares many major powertrain components, including the highly acclaimed 4.5-liter V8 engine -- and the Infiniti G35 sport sedan.
Although Infiniti markets the M45 as a technologically advanced muscle car, we still find it to be first and foremost a luxury vehicle, including most of the features typically found on high-dollar models.
While we're not prepared to call the M45 the end-all sport sedan in its price range, buyers who find the pricey V8 versions of the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar S-Type and Mercedes-Benz E-Class out of comfortable reach may appreciate the value this Infiniti offers.

Infiniti (Nissan's upscale division, as Lexus is to Toyota and Acura is to Honda) introduced its blistering Q45 four-door more than 15 years ago, about the same time Lexus brought in the LS400.
What you get with this Infiniti is a car that easily competes with all of them on the standard criteria such as braking, acceleration, cornering, cabin creature comforts and the tattletale mirror test when you drive by a big plate-glass window...
But Infiniti still doesn't have that cachet, that defining part of the language that says it is part of the zeitgeist, part of the car culture, which is too bad because Infiniti makes cars that don't have to apologize to anyone.

But since the Cedric/Gloria platform provided the basis for the Q45 in the first place, there was a swell way in which Infiniti could pull one of its niche-busting tricks and stick a V-8 right in among the competitors' six-cylinders at a price in the low $40s.
The overall effect is somewhat conservative, but the M45 is still arguably better-looking than the Q45, and it does pack that 4.5-liter V-8 in a slightly lighter package (by about 110 pounds).

Infiniti claims the rear-seat room to be on a par with that of the Lexus LS430 (at 46 cubic feet, the M45 has two fewer than the Lexus), and sure enough, we found space back there tolerable even for a six-foot-five passenger.
However, the rear center seat is much less inviting, with a broad transmission tunnel consuming much of the floor space, forcing the middle passenger to splay his legs and have his feet share the front seatback cutouts with the outboard passengers.

 2006 Infiniti M35/45 - Road Test & Review - Automobile Magazine
After all, the outgoing M45, a curious blend of 1980s styling and 1990s technology, has been nearly invisible since Nissan rushed the Japanese-market Cedric here in 2002 to give Infiniti a tenuous toehold in the mid-size luxury-sedan segment.
Go with the 335-hp M45, though, and you'll get the same smooth and torquey V-8 as in the Q45 but with a slightly bigger cabin, none of the Q45's steering and suspension slop, and a lower sticker (though prices have yet to be announced).
Infiniti surely has learned from the FX that captivating design, combined with world-class engineering and performance, is its ticket to the big time.

The new car appears to be more of a doppelganger for the previous generation Q45 than it is a stablemate to the current Q. We were also dismayed by the early publicity photos which portrayed a high ground clearance, especially exaggerated by its lack of front chin bodywork.
Disappointingly, Infiniti chose to use the same imitation chrome found on the door handles of the $28,000 G35, which is not acceptable on a $43,000 M45!
While the car may be a big financial hit, Infiniti will have to make the next generation M45 with less compromises if they want their brand to compete and be recognized amongst the ranks of Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes.
