Inflation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Inflation can be contrasted with "reflation," which is either a rise of prices from a deflated state, or alternately a reduction in the rate of deflation, that is, the general level of prices are falling at a decreasing rate.
Inflation is measured by observing the change in the price of a large number of goods and services in an economy (usually based on data collected by government agencies, though labor unions and business magazines have also done this job).
Inflation, however, above these relatively low amounts is recognized as having increasingly negative effects on the economy.

 Inflation for Beginners
Inflation also predicts that the primordial perturbations may have left a trace in the form of gravitational radiation with particular characteristics, and it is hoped that detectors sensitive enough to identify this characteristic radiation may be developed within the next ten or twenty years.
Inflation then stops, leaving an expanding Universe rather like our own which may contain one or two monopoles, within each of which there are more regions of inflating spacetime.
Inflation became established as the standard model of the very early Universe in the 1980s.

 Inflation theory prediction
If inflation theory is correct, one can only reconcile observation and theory if the bulk of the dark matter is uniformly distributed over scales up to 10 Mpc.
The theory of inflation predicts that the density parameter Omega is equal to one.
Any deviations from one at the epoch of inflation can be visualized as a slight curvature of space which gets smoothed out as the universe expands by a large factor among the inflationary epoch.

 ~@Com~~~BIG BANG THEORY UNDER FIRE~~
Inflation theory, that was invented for the purpose, is said to provide simple solutions to some of the problems of pre-inflation BBT.(3,4) However, convincing support for claims of solutions to the singularity, smoothness, horizon, and flatness problems is lacking.
Inflation theory, that is claimed to solve several of the major problems of conventional BBT, postulates a flat universe.(15) For that reason the significance of the missing mass problem has in recent years increased in the minds of those who support that theory.
Inflation theorists have alleged that the inflationary expansion of the early BB universe, involving speeds orders of magnitude greater than that of light,(3,4) did not involve the travel of mass or energy, and thus did not violate the theory of relativity in solving the singularity problem.

 The Inflationary Universe
Although inflation has many attractive features, it is not yet a proven theory because many of the details still do not work out right in realistic calculations without making assumptions that are poorly justified.
In the corresponding theory of inflation, the Universe, because of properties of elementary particles not accounted for in the standard big bang models, expands for a fleeting instant at its beginning at a much higher rate than that expected for the big bang.
The preceding problems with the big bang can be alleviated all at once (at least in principle), by a new kind of cosmology called the inflationary universe.

Testing Inflation Theory (MAP Special Exhibit)
Inflation is an extension of the Big Bang theory in which the Universe expanded from an atomic scale to a cosmic scale in a fraction of a second, making the Universe geometrically flat.
Inflation (and subsequent theories that complement it) predicts that the cosmic microwave background will have a series of "bumps" or very specific peaks in temperature fluctuations at very specific angular scales.
Inflation is one of the prime theories that MAP will test.

 Fractal Inflation
Inflation increases the size of the universe by 10^10^12, so that even parts as small as 10^-33 centimeter (the Planck length) emceed the radius of the observable universe, or 10^28 centimeters.
Inflation ends once the ball nears the energy minimun (purple), where it wobbles around and heats the universe.
Inflation also explains the near uniformity of the universe: any lumpiness is too large scale for us to perceive.

 Vacuum energy
Observations that the expanding Universe appears to be accelerating seem to support the Cosmic inflation theory —first proposed by Alan Guth (1981) — in which the nascent Universe passed through a phase of exponential expansion driven by a negative vacuum energy density (positive vacuum pressure).
These efforts had failed so far, and the exact nature of the particles or fields that generate vacuum energy, with a density such as that required by the Inflation theory, remains a mystery.
During the 1980s, there were many attempts to relate the fields that generate the vacuum energy to specific fields that were predicted by the Grand unification theory, and to use observations of the Universe to confirm that theory.

 DASI data support inflation theory
The theory, called cosmic inflation, proposes that the universe underwent a gigantic growth spurt in a fraction of a second, moments after the big bang.
As predicted by inflation theory, the spectrum shows a strong peak at left, a second peak at center and strongly suggests a third peak at right.
Inflation created tiny lumps in the distribution of matter and tiny variations in the temperature of the cosmic microwave background, the afterglow of the big bang, sowing the seeds that stretched the fuzziness of the subatomic world to cosmic scales.

 Inflation Theory
One of the successes with the inflation theory was that it solved this so-called "monopole problem": monopoles would be exponentially diluted during the inflation, to such an extent that there would be little chance of even one in the Milky Way.
Inflation also predicts a much smaller initial region, which is required for smoothing out the distribution of matter and radiation, only leaving behind tiny density fluc-
There are issues about the nature of the inflaton field, the events that led to the onset of inflation and then the nagging question about the beginning of the universe.

 BBC - Science & Nature - Space - Inflation
Inflation is the best theory to date to describe how this might have happened.
This theory has sparked some mind-blowing ideas - including the possibility that inflation may be an ongoing process and not just a unique event that created our own Universe.
Amazingly, quantum theory says that bubbles of energy can appear temporarily out of absolutely nothing.

 Inflation
If this theory is the cause of inflation, then the man delivering the merchandise, and charging for his services, is causing inflation, because his transportation charges are built into the cost of merchandise.
If this theory is the cause of inflation, rather than an increase in the money supply, the person growing wheat should give it away freely, because if he charged for his wheat, it causes the price of bread to go up.
I ask those who adhere to the theory that all interest is usury, and causes inflation: If dollars change hands, because of interest charged for a loan, and the number of dollars remains constant, as does the citizenry, how can the interest possibly cause actual inflation?

 Astronomie. Inflation Theory Detailed
The inflation theory originated at the end of the 1970s from the study a particle physics expert, Alan Guth, was leading with Henry Tye about monopoles.
The inflation theory brings solutions to some classical paradoxes of the original Big Bang: the inflation is an answer to the question of the curvature of the Universe.
According to the inflation theory the Universe until T=0 is seen like a minute ensemble of a scalar field located on the plateau of an energy field.

Re: Does inflation theory imply a (slightly) closed universe?
Re: Does inflation theory imply a (slightly) closed universe?
Inflation in its simple forms results in a universe precisely balanced between open and closed: Omega=1.0 to many significant places (20+ ?) Of course theorists are clever!
Thus more complicated models of inflation (sometime involving multiple fields) can yield either open of closed universes depending on the details.

Satellite Measurements of Cosmic Radiation Support Inflation Theory
The inflationary theory of the beginning of the universe received a boost last week when scientists reported that data from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite were consistent with the theory's predictions.
Certainly when I first calculated what kind of a distribution of non-uniformities inflation would give rise to, it sounded very abstract to me. It never seemed real that somebody would actually someday measure those non-uniformities," Guth said.
Because of quantum uncertainties in the processes which end inflation, it ends at slightly different times in different places, and that leads to anisotropies, or slightly different mass densities in different places." It is these anisotropies that have been detected by COBE in the form of non-uniformities in the cosmic background radiation.

 Cosmic Significance
If Alan Guth’s inflation theory of the Big Bang is correct, then the space/time manifold is so incredibly large---and matter/energy so sparse and thinly distributed---that there could not be any possible material object that could be counted as significant based solely on size.
Even all of the matter in the entire universe brought together into one big ball would be lost in the vastness of inflationary space.(4)
So in order for us to exist, the universe must be just as big as it is, in all its vast array.

Models in which the absence of precommitment in monetary policy leads to excessive inflation, therefore, predict lower average inflation in more open economies.
Because unanticipated monetary expansion leads to real exchange rate depreciation and because the harms of real depreciation are greater in more open economies, the benefits of unanticipated expansion are decreasing in the degree of openness.

Critical Mass - Part II of the Amazing
The degeneration theory of grade inflation is more nostalgic than diagnostic; it is not invested in identifying causes or proposing solutions so much as it is in hearkening back to the good old days when men were men and the gentleman's C was a badge of honorable mediocrity.
The Degeneration Theory: This school of thought sees grade inflation as a sign of a much broader and deeper cultural degeneration, one that includes the decay of morals, the erosion of family values, the displacement of meritocracy by affirmative action and political preferment, the death of taste, and an overall decline in standards.
Virginia Postrel explains in compelling detail how the massive grade inflation and tuition hikes that characterized the 1980s and 90s were created by an increased demand for education in a market with static supply.
