Infogrames Entertainment SA (IESA) is an international holding company headquartered in Lyon, France.
According to Bonnell on a television interview, the founders used a mix-and-match computer program to suggest names for their new company, one of which was "Infogramme": a portmanteau of the French words "informatique" (information technology) and "programme" (a computer program).
It was founded in 1993 as GT Interactive, and purchased in 1999 by Infogrames.

GT Interactive was acquired by IESA in 1999 and renamed Infogrames, Inc. Infogrames acquired the Atari brand name from its purchase of Hasbro Interactive, which in turn had acquired it from JTS Corporation, which the original Atari had merged with in 1996.
Infogrames, Inc. intermittently used the Atari name as a brand name for selected titles before IESA official changed the subsidiary's name to Atari, Inc. in 2003.
In October 2001, Infogrames announced that it was "reinventing" the Atari brand with the launch of three new games.

The agreement is comprised of three main elements, including the Infogrames acquisition of Hasbro Interactive; a long-term licensing agreement giving Infogrames exclusive rights to develop and publish digital interactive games based on current and future Hasbro properties on all existing and future digital interactive formats; and the acquisition of Games.com.
Infogrames will purchase 100% of the common stock of Hasbro Interactive and Games.com for $100 million - comprised of $95 million in Infogrames Entertainment SA securities (approximately 4.5 million common shares) and $5 million in cash.
Under the terms of the agreement, Infogrames gains the rights through a licensing agreement with Hasbro to develop games based on Hasbro properties for a period of 15 years plus an option for an additional 5 years based on performance, on all existing and future digital interactive formats.

Infogrames held such an event last week just outside of San Francisco, during which time we got to see a number of their PC titles set to release during the remainder of this year -- Unreal 2: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament 2003, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, and the Civilization III: Play the World expansion pack.

Although Activision briefly held the license in 1999, releasing the widely derided Civilization: Call to Power, Infogrames subsidiary Atari had been publishing the series--and its numerous expansion packs--since 1996's Civilization II, and it had announced that Civilzation IV was in development last year.
For those interested in the rest of Infogrames' financials, the company said its consolidated revenue for the first half of fiscal 2005 was 277 million euros ($365 million), down from 314.9 million euros ($415 million) the previous year.
