Short for management information system or management information services, and pronounced as separate letters, MIS refers broadly to a computer-based system that provides managers with the tools for organizing, evaluating and efficiently running their departments.

This is an introductory Management Information Systems course designed to prepare students for their future career roles as professional accountants or managers involved with the planning, designing, controlling, and auditing of information systems.
Managers need to understand computer and communication technologies, the opportunities they provide to business, the problems and pitfalls they present, and the resources these technologies require.
Accountants and general managers need to be informed and intelligent systems users, rather than systems professionals, and thus the course provides a broad, conceptual, management-oriented introduction to the subject, by focusing on the role of information systems in decision making and control in organizations.

 Management Information Systems
Information and instructions flow downward through the organization, communicating the nature of tasks to be performed, the materials to be used, and the destination of goods or the recipients of services.
Managers, some of whom did not even know how to type, had to rely on those who had technical expertise to use the systems to deliver the information to them.
Although some systems have evolved to the point where reports are distributed through email rather than through slower interoffice mail, the principle remains the same: someone else, usually the MIS department, prepackages the information and gives it to the user.
