In the context of building an IST European Research Area, a key role of ISTAG is to reflect and advise on the definition and implementation of a coherent research policy in Europe.
The objectives of the IST thematic priority are not purely to produce the highest quality research in Europe which can be exploited by European companies, but also to meet the broader objectives of the European Union established by the treaties and Council of Ministers.
Similarly, ISTAG has not strongly supported proposals for European Technology Platforms (ETP) as a suitable instrument to structure research and innovation in the ICT area in FP7, although they are supported by industries with a different structure, such as aerospace.

Foresight on Information Society Technologies in Europe (FISTE) is an umbrella project bringing together various activities of the IPTS/ICT unit.
The FISTE initiative is composed of cross-cutting and multidisciplinary foresight exercises linking the monitoring and forecasting of IST trends (via scenario development) and technology roadmapping, and on the other hand, impact analysis of these technologies in selected areas (including best practice in IST innovation).

Information Society Technologies help improve electronic access to environmental information, the latter called for under the recently signed and soon to be ratified "Aarhus" ' Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decisionmaking and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters.' The Convention was signed in Denmark, June 1998 at the environmental ministerial conference.
The Convention's implementation was reviewed during 6-7 December, 1999 at a workshop in Newcastle, UK and has also been examined by the REC's quarterly magazine, The Bulletin.
In the Autumn-Winter 98 issue, it carried a feature on the CAPE project, and most recently in October 1999 examined the status of the environmental information society.

IST-EC 2 is a joint Canada-Europe project whose objective is to connect the European and Canadian research communities in key areas of the Information Society Technologies (IST).
