Information ecology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Information ecology draws on the language of ecology - habitat, species, evolution, ecosystem, niche, growth, equilibrium, etc - to describe and analyze information systems from a perspective that considers the distribution and abundance of organisms, their relationships with each other, and how they influence and are influenced by their environment.
The virtual lack of boundaries between information systems and the impact of information technology on economic, social and environmental activities frequently calls on an information ecologist to consider local information ecosystems in the context of larger systems, and of the evolution of global information ecosystems.
Information ecology was used as book title by Thomas H. Davenport and Laurence Prusak [1], with a focus on the organization dimensions of information ecology.

The notion of an ecology as we use it is metaphorical, intended to evoke an image of biological ecologies with their complex dynamics and diverse species and opportunistic niches for growth.
An ecology is marked by the presence of certain keystone species whose presence is crucial to the survival of the ecology itself.
The parts of an information ecology are as different from one another as oak trees and scrub jays in a California woodland ecology.

Arguing that the information that comes from computer systems may be considerably less valuable to managers than information that flows in from a variety of other sources, the author describes an approach that encompasses the company's entire information environment, the management of which he calls information ecology.
Only when organizations are able to combine and integrate these diverse sources of information, and to take them to a higher level where information becomes knowledge, will they realize the full power of their information ecology.
Information and knowledge are human creations, he points out, and we will never excel at managing them until we give people a primary role.

Established in 1920, Ecology publishes research and synthesis papers on all aspects of ecology, with particular emphasis on papers that develop new concepts in ecology, that test ecological theory, or that lead to an increased appreciation for the diversity of ecological phenomena.
Included within the journal are papers on physiological responses of individual organisms to their biotic and abiotic environments, ecological genetics and evolution, the structure and dynamics of populations, interactions among individuals of the same or different species, the behavior of individuals and groups of organisms, the organization of biological communities, landscape ecology, and ecosystems processes.
The number and average length of Articles published in Ecology is decreasing, and the number of Reports is increasing.

Information ecology pulls together all the theoretical threads and adds information on case studies of mostly American businesses.
It is refreshing to read that information technology is not in itself a solution, but that the myriad of factors relating to people, organisations, business needs and technical structures need to be considered in utilising and planning information services.
Davenport binds together insights on organisational politics and how it affects "information politics", individual behaviour, (Access to information is not the same as knowledge.), organisational cultures reflected in their information behaviour and good business sense on the need for effective use of information.

 Felix Stalder: Information Ecology
The time span in which information really makes a difference is neither intrinsic in the information itself nor in the flow upon which it intends to act but is determined by the relation between the node and flow, by the purpose of action.
Information is difference and the nodes survive as long as they can make a difference, that is as long as they can produce information that is valid for others.
This information, the difference between the node and the flow and among the nodes, is the basis upon which the flows are redirected and new connections are established and old ones maintained.

 Content | Information Ecology
Despite twenty years of attempts to control information by creating an "architecture" of what is needed by whom and how they might receive it, the centralized engineering approaches employed have often neither informed nor improved our discussions about information needs.
Information architecture, in the broadest sense, is simply a set of aids that match information needs with information resources.
From an ecological perspective, identifying what information is available today and where it can be found (information mapping) is a much better use of architectural design than attempting to model the future.

ARL Proceedings 127: Information Ecology: Libraries and Government Should Evolve Together by Bruce W. McConnell
In the sphere of information dissemination, the immediate impacts of the technology are to open up the creative process, permit the disaggregation of post-creation value-added, and flatten the distribution structure.
Many of the costs of information maintenance appear to be overhead at first glance, because of their indirect relationship to the core mission.
It generally empowers the agencies which are most familiar with the information to invoke their understanding of the need to preserve their unique holdings, such as a scientific paper or data set of dubious apparent value today but potentially priceless in the future.

This is the premise of the Institute for Information and Communication Ecology (Institut für Informations- und Kommunikationsökologie, IKÖ) (2) founded this year in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Information technologies are able to disseminate an incredible abundance of messages, without making explicit the contexts they arise from (there are no pure facts), the blindness of their own limitations, and the specific kind of partiality they are supposed to have.
The paradigm of modern information technology is one (not the only!) factor of the vast cultural problem of knowledge storage and accessibility in all its fields and forms (21).

Information providers -- specifically those in an information systems organization, which normally has far more employees than any other provider -- focus on that narrow band of what can be contained in bits and by algorithms.
Information managers would probably be better off if they declared a five- or 10-year moratorium on new technology and focused on information use itself.
Information ecology, which prescribes a looser approach to structuring information, is much more appropriate for managing information of all kinds -- not just the data that can scroll down a computer screen.

Paradoxically, a consequence of the information explosion is diminishing awareness; disciplines are becoming increasingly specialized, individuals, groups, organizational units are becoming ever more insular.
Lack of introspection in an enterprise setting contributes to "organizational ignorance", a consequence of which is, for example, work/tasks having to be redone, or the collection of information that has already been collected.
Inference is driven by computations within the space, for example, a high degree of information flow between two words equates with a strong inferential connection (either explicit or implicit).
