Informix was founded in 1980, went public in 1986, and for a period during the 1990s Informix was the second most popular database system, after Oracle.
In November 2002, Phillip White, the former CEO of Informix ousted in 1997, was indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with eight counts of securities, wire, and mail fraud.
Another Informix officer, the company's Vice-President in charge of European operations Walter Königseder, was indicted by a federal grand jury earlier but, as he was a citizen and resident of Munich, Germany, the United States has been unable to secure his extradition.

WingZ delivered in 1989 a lean package (at about 0.5 Mb, as I recall), that included most of the features that Microsoft was not able to ape until version 4 of Excel.
The reason was that WingZ was really a scripting environment that had been customized to act as a spreadsheet.
WingZ graphed its data directly in the spreadsheet (at a time when every other spreadsheet would have you enter into a separate graphing mode), and was sensitive to changes as they were made in the spreadhsheet.

You may recall that this company had a killer spreadsheet program called Wingz and Informix believed that there future was in desktop productivity.
One of an Informix salesperson's primary responsibilities was to determine whether a customer was lying and whether we had an honest opprotunity to win the deal.
Of course, Informix went on to some monsterous misses that ended up costing Phil his job, and in the subsequent revelations and earnings restatements that went on to legal proceedings culminating in some jail time for Phil.

I was also in sales at Informix during this era and frankly we were so busy "doing" it's remarkable how Martin was also able to observe and analyze so precisely while consistently blowing out his numbers and making it to the vaunted "Summit Club".

The thing is, AppleWorks spreadsheet is a stripped down version of Resolve (which is actually Informix Wingz* in disguise).
* And Informix Wingz is a version of a very, very old PC program called "Smart" and while we're at it, Excel is derived from an old Apple II program called Microsoft Multiplan.

Both Mesa and PowerStep, which Appsoft has said it will repackage as Appsoft Solution, are native NeXTSTEP programs that are fully compatible with Lotus 1-2-3, a niche currently unfilled by Informix's Wingz (a Macintosh port) and Lotus Improv (a one-of-a-kind financial modeler).
It is somewhat unusual for a NeXTSTEP software category to experience such a heated fight for market share.
And Pollak knows that without the substantial marketing resources of an Appsoft, Lotus, or Informix, his best chance is to get Mesa to market quickly.
