Infoseek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Infoseek was a very popular search engine founded in 1994 by Steve Kirsch, et.
Infoseek featured a very complex system of search modifiers, including boolean modifiers such as the most basic "OR" and "NOT", up to parentheses and quotes, up to being able to say that you want one word or phrase to appear within x number of words from another word or phrase.
Elements of Infoseek's Ultraseek software technology were sold in 2000 to Inktomi, which Yahoo later acquired in 2002.

Infoseek had a sterling reputation among both searchers and webmasters, and its demise was a sad event indeed.
Profile of Infoseek founder Steve Kirsch, who describes his biggest blunders: "Kirsch says he turned down a chance to acquire Yahoo in 1995 for $20 million 'because I thought it was overvalued.' He could have sold 6 million shares of Infoseek in early 1999 for about $100 a share -- and didn't.

Infoseek now claims a database of more than 45 million web pages, making it the 7th largest index of the web.
During the past year, Infoseek has changed their indexing rules in order to rid their database of spammers which may explain why they have dropped at least 25 million pages from their index.
They are also case sensitive in the way they deliver searches to their browsers, so use upper and lower case instances of your keywords and phrases.
