Infrared Data Association - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) defines physical specifications communications protocol standards for the short range exchange of data over infrared light, for uses such as personal area networks (PANs).
IrDA data communications operate in half-duplex mode because while transmitting, a device’s receiver is blinded by the light of its own transmitter, and thus, full-duplex communication is not feasible.
MIR (Medium Infrared) is not an official term, but is sometimes used to refer to speeds of 0.576 Mbit/s and 1.152 Mbit/s.

Report on Visit to Infrared Data Association Meeting
Our focus is on the infrared link, however, since it's low cost and hands-free hook-up make it the most likely interface to exist or be incorporated into devices on a widespread basis.
While the person is using the infrared remote control, the IrDA device will simply back off when it is stepped, and reduce its transmissions after the person stops using the remote control.
It should be noted, however, that a joystick would need to have continuous data flowing, and thus the use of joysticks in a room would completely preclude the use of any IrDA 1.1 devices which could pick up the light from the remote devices.

IrDA To Ratify Standard For Infrared Wireless Networking - Technology News by TechWeb
The Infrared Data Association is expectedto ratify a high-speed version of its infrared wireless networking standard this week.
The Very Fast Infrared specification increases the data rate of standards-based infrared LAN equipment from 4 megabits per second to 16 Mbps.
This summer, the IrDA is also expected to approve the Advanced Infrared specification, which will let access points receive infrared connections in a 180-degree radius from as far as 10 meters away and operate at data rates of up to 4 Mbps.

IrDA stands for Infrared Data Association and is a wireless infrared data communication protocol standard used on an increasing variety of computing devices including desktops, notebooks, PDAs, HPCs, digital cameras, printers, pagers and cell phones.
Since interoperability requires standardized infrared hardware devices and software drivers operating across a broad range of computing devices, it was a logical choice to use "comp.dcom.infrared" as the group name.
The Infrared Data Association (the Worldwide standards body), supports this newsgroup and its over 800 active members (representing over 160 companies) have pledged support for the creation of this newsgroup.

IrDA is a standard defined by the IrDA consortium (Infrared Data Association).
Data format is the same as for a serial port - asynchronously transmitted word, with a startbit at the beginning.
Beyond a certain distance, the receiver tends to loose individual pulses, or decrease their amplitude and duration (after all, it is an analog circuit although its output is supposed to be "digital").
