  INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY
Infrared photography is of interest to the amateur and commercial photographer and to scientists and technologists because it produces images that are not possible with conventional photographic films.
In infrared photographs made outdoors from the ground or from the air, grasses and the foliage of deciduous trees appear white because of the high near-infrared transmission characteristic of green chlorophyll and the high infrared reflectance of the underlying cellulosic structure of these subjects.
Infrared photographs have been used for the construction of charts, the study of sandbars and silting of navigable channels, the control of erosion and pollution, the charting of currents, and the study of marine life.

Infrared filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An infrared filter is a filter to remove visible light and only pass infrared light in different wavelengths.
There has been several reports that using exposed and developed film works as an infrared filter.
The theory is that the film goes jet-fl thus blocking visible light but allowing infrared to pass.

 Reflected infrared photography: Filters
An infrared transmission filter must either be used over the camera lens in a light-tight mount for the normal technique, or over the light source in total darkness for the night surveillence technique.
These infrared transmission filters are visually opaque, or depending on the type, may reveal some deep red transmission when viewing a bright light source.
The Wratten 87 is often selected as the standard infrared filter as it has a sharp cut-off at 750nm, and transmits freely throughout the infrared region.

Infrared is a spectrum of light beyond that which we normally see.
Infrared light focuses at a slightly different point than visible light, so make sure that you use an aperture in Step 6 that has a decent depth of field.
Once you’ve taken an infrared shot, you’ll probably want to manipulate it a bit to make it better emulate the look of infrared film, which has unusual "color" (white foliage, for example) and a bit of graininess and bloom to edges.

Infrared Photography: Photography Techniques: Learn: Digital Photography Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-08)
With most imagers, even if they do respond to infrared light, their sensitivity to this part of the spectrum is very poor and exists many, many stops lower than their response to visible red, green and blue.
Most of the red, green and blue filters (or magenta, cyan, yellow and green filters in Canon digital cameras) at the surface of the chip are fairly IR transparent.
Infrared wavelengths are longer and focus at a different distance behind the lens.

Making an Improvised Infrared Transmitting Filter
The result of this is that it appears that one thickness of E6 film is roughly the equivalent of an 87 filter but with a broader spectral response and with some 1% transmission valleys at 500 and 600 nm.
The spectral transmission curves for the 1 and 2 sheets of E6 film, and that of a Wratten 25 and 87 filter are attached below.
I also used one and two layers of Ektachrome film as a filter in front of my camera's lens and the images were not totally fuzzy and unusable.

The subject of color rendition with these DSLR cameras while using infrared filters is apparently a complicated one, involving factors such as the sensitivity of the CMOS sensor chip, the Bayer filters used, the infrared filter used and the white balance algorithms.

CoCam: Infrared Photography - Infrared FAQ
Infrared light is reflected from the camera film pressure plate back onto the film and records as halos if the pressure plate is flat and without "dimples".
IR filters are generally opaque so normal use with an SLR means that when the filter is attached to the front of the camera then you cannot see through the viewfinder.
Filters can be used in front of the lens or at the film plane using a thin piece of filter material taped across the film rails inside the back of the camera.

 Near Infrared Digital Photography Tutorial
Infrared photography has been around for at least 70 years, but until recently has not been easily accessible to those not versed in traditional photographic processes.
The #25 filter lets in a significant amount of red light, and is often used in traditional photography because it allows image previewing through the viewfinder.
Our next goal is to size the filter to an appropriate size, and then apply a mask to the infrared layer to let the color image through everywhere except for the area inside the filter.

Each filter is packaged in a protective plastic filter case and a Hoya Transmittance Chart for the RM100 is included for reference.
Note the signature infrared characteristics of these images captured in sunlight: white foliage because infrared light is reflected by the plants, and dark skies and water because it is absorbed.

Infrared Spectrometer Filter Is Electrically Tunable - March, 2002   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-08)
Portable infrared spectrometers enable in situ analysis of compounds in a variety of hazardous environments on Earth and in space.
To construct the filter, the researchers stacked two 400 x 25 x 25-µm silicon plates, chosen for their electrical conductivity, infrared transparency and high reflectance.
By electrostatically deforming the reflectors of the filter, the researchers found that they could tune for infrared wavelengths and could modulate their intensities to select the signatures of specific compounds.

To answer the question briefly: photographs in infrared show quite unusual tonality, different than that to which we are used, and this may make them esthetically pleasing, at least in many cases.
Here is a brief comparison of the infrared filters, including those made by B+W, Hoya, and Tiffen as of November, 2004, Those generally available in glass (as I've checked at B&H in November, 2004) are marked in bold.
The small amount of visible (far red) light which this filter lets through does not affect pictures enough to spoil the IR effect, while coloring your images red (or purple), therefore they need to be converted to monochrome in postprocessing.

I discovered infrared photography in 2001 when I added a Hoya R72 infrared filter to the Lensmate adapter on my Canon G1, put the camera on a tripod and pressed the shutter.
The culprit is the internal infrared cut filter ("cut" as in cuts infrared light down or out, depending on its strength), also known as a hot mirror.
