In "Malina," the German film maker Werner Schroeter's adaptation of a novel by Ingeborg Bachman, Isabelle Huppert portrays a writer who suffers from an interminable case of existential angst.
It may also be that you have to be intimately familiar with the Bachman novel and with the author's legend for the film to resonate.

The Ingeborg Bachmann Centre, established at the then Institute of Germanic Studies in 2002 with the support of the Erste Bank, the Österreichische Nationalbank, the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Österreich Kooperation, explores this contribution by means of its writers-in-residence programme and by organizing lectures, seminars, workshops and reading groups.
The outcome of an innovative form of cross-institutional co-operation, this exciting academic initiative concentrates on twentieth-century Austrian literature, focusing above all on developments from 1945 onwards, and takes as its figurehead Ingeborg Bachmann, whose poem ‘Abschied von England’ encapsulates the challenge presented by other cultures and the difficulty of comprehending them.

Also a wonderful window into a modern German culture that continues to bear the impossible weight of destruction, sorrow, and betrayal.
