Ingersoll was the son of a prominent British official, whose strong Loyalist sentiments would lead to his being tarred and feathered at the hands of radical Patriots.
Ingersoll graduated from Yale College in 1766, studied law in Philadelphia, and was admitted to the bar in 1773.
Ingersoll contributed to the constitutional process through his involvement in several key Supreme Court cases that defined basic points in constitutional law during the early years of the new republic.

Ingersoll had the distinction of being Oxford's cheese capital in the mid 1800's to early 1900's, producing and packaging a good deal of the County's renowned cheddar.
Ingersoll also saw the beginning of the Canadian Dairymen's Association in 1867, springing up due to Oxford's cheese expertise and also from the farmer's drive to improve and standardize the dairy industry.

Subsequently, Ingersoll held a variety of public positions: member of the Philadelphia common council (1789); attorney general of Pennsylvania (1790-99 and 1811-17); Philadelphia city solicitor (1798-1801); U.S. District Attorney for Pennsylvania (1800-01); and presiding judge of the Philadelphia District Court (1821-22).
