On the night of July 18-19, 1965, Ingrid Jonker walked into the sea at Three Anchor Bay, where her body was found in shallow water at about 7am by a man on his way to work.
Ingrid was the daughter of Dr Abraham H Jonker, author, journalist (editor of Die Suiderstem), later Nationalist Party MP for Fort Beaufort for many years, and Beatrice Cilliers, an enigmatic figure who had a number of nervous breakdowns and died before Ingrid's 11th birthday.
Beatrice had left her husband and the marriage before Ingrid was born, so Ingrid spent most of her primary school years with her grandmother "Ouma Annie" and her elder sister Anna, in abject poverty in the Strand and Gordon's Bay.
